CMLL Tuesday Preview: 4 Up, 2 Down

Updated on March 20, 2017

Is it just me or does the beginning of the week look pretty good for CMLL? Tonight’s Puebla show is very solid and tomorrow could potentially be even better…well once you get past the wasteland that is matches 1 and 2. Following that we have a great looking trios match, a potentially awesome Lightning Match, a trios match that could be leading into bigger and better things and a main event that’s all but guaranteed to send the crowd home happy in some shape or form. You really can’t go wrong with this show at all sports fans, which makes it all the more easy for me to preview. Is that actually a phrase I just used or are you all going to be looking at me like I’m that three breasted woman from Total Recall? Less talk Cult and more previewing. Moses, save me from myself!

Bengala & Leono vs. Cholo & Inquisidor

What to Expect: This is the type of match you see booked that causes you to take a step back and contemplate everything in existence. Seriously; who on Grodd’s green earth thought this was a good idea? The only argument you can make for this match is that it features the return of Leono, and I’m pretty sure Leono’s closest living relatives don’t give a shit about that. Once you get past that gem there’s nothing redeemable about a match that features CMLL Bengala as your best worker. Do yourself a favor and close your eyes really, REALLY tight until this one is over. Hell you may want to keep them closed after that; have you seen the next match?

Winners: When in doubt, go with the rudos. They take it in three long, excruciating three falls. Remember sports fans; eyes wide shut for this, and I don’t mean the Stanley Kubrick film.

Magia Blanca, Sangre Imperial, Starman vs. Nitro, Sangre Azteca, Skándalo

What to Expect: The only difference between the first match and this one is that it features an ultra talented performer in Magia Blanca. He is sadly the only one you can apply that statement to in this match, which features Skándalo as the second best performer (GULP!), two of the most unprofessional luchadors in CMLL (Nitro, Sangre Azteca), an over the hill Starman and poor Sangre Imperial, who has shown minimal improvement since his CMLL debut and probably isn’t doing much better here against the Confidence Killers. Unless Blanca chooses this random second match on a Tuesday show to give his greatest performance, you probably want to head for the hills with this one too. The good news; it’s all on the upswing from here.

Winners: If the technicos win I will sell my soul to Satan. True story. Luckily it won’t come to that as the rudos will pick this up in three falls, with Nitro sealing it with a splash on Blanca to rub the salt in.

Blue Panther, Drone, Tritón vs. El Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón

What to Expect: This match looks so much better than the previous two that you have to wonder if someone just snagged the book from whoever booked the first two matches and planned the rest of the card out from there. My money is on Blue Panther being the culprit in that scenario, and if he is thank Grodd. I don’t know where Junior and Panther are for this one but Blue Panther has found himself some capable replacements in Drone and Tritón to go up against what might be the best trio in Mexico not named Los Revolucionarios. I do not kid when I say this match could be special if these guys go all out AND aren’t forced to bend to restrictions. With Blue Panther and his creative ways of laying out matches involved I don’t think we need to worry, so strap yourself in for some crazy spots, crazy Los Cientificos double teams, maybe one long fall featuring Blue Panther doing mat work and did I mention crazy spots? I have only one bit of advice here and it’s for Forastero if he’s reading; go for that springboard dropkick from the ramp to the ring again young man. I know you messed it up the last time and I (and many others) were terrified you had done some serious damage, but you can’t get gun shy over it. Sometimes the move will hit perfectly and sometimes it won’t; either way you just gotta keep trying every chance you’re given.

Winners: Could easily go either way. As I have the rudos winning the first two matches though I’ll go with a technico victory, with Drone pinning Forastero with the knees and Tritón hitting that beaut of a 450 on Cuatrero to seal the deal.

Lightning Match

Guerrero Maya Jr. vs. Virus

What to Expect: I’m probably going to get some flack for this but who cares; I’m not entirely sold on this match. I know how can I not be sold on Guerrero Maya vs. Virus? For one, it’s a Lightning Match which means they’re getting limited amount of time to work their magic. Two, and most importantly, the last several Lightning Matches I’ve seen Virus in haven’t exactly brought the house down; hell is Lightning bout with Pegasso a few weeks ago arguably wasn’t even that good. I know it’s Pegasso and Virus wasn’t going 100% but still; it’s some cause for concern people. I’m not saying this match will be a travesty or anything and there’s always a chance for greatness when you get two talented luchadors like Guerrero Maya and Virus involved. I’m just saying; caution your expectations with this one. It’ll no doubt be good, but it’s not guaranteed to be great. Unless of course either Maya or Virus are reading this right now (they aren’t) and are so angered by my doubts that they turn it on and make me look stupid. Hey Virus and Maya; MAKE ME LOOK STUPID!

Winner: I’d have this go the full distance ala Maya-Bobby V, but my guess is Virus will continue his winning ways by submitting Maya with a cool submission around the seven minute mark.

Luciferno, Mephisto, Pólvora vs. Negro Casas, Puma, Tiger

What to Expect: You know how many people (including yourself) have been bitching about Negro Casas, Puma and Tiger not yet receiving the Mexican National Trios Championship match they were promised? Well look who they’re facing here; two thirds of that Mexican National Trios Championship team!

Now does this mean the match is happening? No. At the same time CMLL generally doesn’t do rudo on rudo matches for no reason, and the fact that the Casas’ were promised this shot and are now matched up against Luciferno and Mephisto is something I’d take as a good sign. Even better is that this match looks really good on paper with Pólvora replacing Ephesto while he recovers from blood poisoning (I don’t know what it entails, but it’s exactly the kind of ailment I’d expect a soldier from hell like Ephesto to suffer from). Maybe CMLL uses that as an out to prevent the title match from happening, but there’s too many coincidences here to suggest that CMLL isn’t looking in that direction. In any event, the Casas’ are awesome, Mephisto is awesome, Pólvora is really awesome and Luciferno always seems to do better when Mephisto is around. Set up or not this should be super fun.

Winners: In case I hadn’t made it clear how optimistic I am already, I’m going to buck trend and say the Casas family wins this match AND officially makes a challenge for the trios titles next week. Will it happen next week? Depends on if Ephesto can go, if CMLL wants someone to work with Mephisto and Luciferno in his place or if they want to wait for Ephesto to return. Either way I see the Casas Family taking this in three falls, with Casas rolling up big dog Mephisto with La Casita. Please let me be right, please let me be right…

Carístico, Dragón Lee, Marco Corleone vs. Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero

What to Expect: Look at this strong looking main event here! This is one of those matches that may not turn out as good as it looks on paper, but it should be a solid time none the less and could be better if nothing is coming out of the semi-main. Really what more can I say than that? Marco will do his shit, Carístico will do his shit, Dragón Lee will go all out because that’s the only way he knows how, Big Euf will be awesome, UG will be UG and Gran Guerrero will admirably try to fill the void left by Niebla Roja’s absence. It’ll be fun; the question is how fun?

Winners: A technico victory to close the show sounds just about right to me. I say Dragón Lee pins Gran Guerrero with a double stomp and Carístico submits Big Euf with La Carística to give the good guys the W.

And scene. I’m out till late tonight folks when my CMLL Puebla review will be dropping. Till then, MOAR DUCHOVNY!
