Can You Guess Who This Is?

One Guess, read on..

Who is this? What happens when your dream to play in the NFL, comes to an end? You worked so hard every year, every day and every moment seeing your future. You worked hard from the moment you stepped out on the field. You kicked the hard- packed dirt around with your cleat. Wondering where the money would come from to get a new pair of cleats for this season. Your parents worked and never came to see you run, play, tackle, win or lose. You have the same heart for each “student-athlete”, helping them to live their dream.

You won the, CIF Boys 2-A Track & Field Championship 100 and 200 yard dash in 1975, 1976, 1977 while attending, Verbum Dei Prep School.  You were fast!  You followed your workouts faithfully and took every part of the game serious. You studied film, game plays and never missed practice.  You worked hard on the field and in the classroom, in the end your hard work paid off. You just got a “FREE” ride to University of Oregon. You couldn’t wait to play at a Div. I school. Trying hard to show your speed, skills and natural talent, you were fighting to start, and that’s what your goal was. You could hardly believe it when Coach said you were “starting” on game day. Your breathing hard, the crowd noise was deafening, and you was soaring high, excited to get out there. Coach called a play, you lined up, at the snap, your body went left, but your cleat stayed planted in the turf. You felt something in your knee pop, you feel the excruciating pain and you collapse, grabbing your leg. They carried you off on a stretcher, into the ambulance and straight to the hospital. You had to have surgery and the doctor says you may never play again. That was when the nightmare started and didn’t seem like it was ever going to end. You could never step back out into the game and didn’t want to stop “dreaming”. You decided to continue being a “Champion” and moved on to bodybuilding. This sport still took dedication and hard work, more so.  To date you still hold the “1988, Mr. Natural International Championships-ABBC”.  “Championships”, you have won many and helped lead teams too many. You coached and won “Championships” with Boise State, “Broncos”, Mt. San Antonio College, and “Mounties” and were the 1st African-American Head Football Coach at Pasadena City College. Where you turned the losing “Lancers” around and gained “faith” from your players. You have trained and coached many young-athletes that have gone on to live their dream, most recent: David Reed, WR for the “Baltimore Ravens”.

If you haven’t guessed who this is, he was your teammate, your friend, your mentor, and a football coach, Kenny Lawler. He continues to dedicate his time to helping “student-athletes” train, prepare to live their dream. He is the West Coast Director of B.A.S.I.C., a non-profit organization, which holds two camps a year and camp tours for student-athletes. He enhances student- athletes life, in living their dream and how “God” has a plan for us “ALL”.

I know this guy! From middle school to high school. This guy has been extraordinary. I played on teams with him, and I always trusted his instinct, his desire, his speed, and now his passion. Way to go Kenny, my teammate, and friend.
