Australian Rules Football

Updated on September 3, 2012

Footy. Yes? No? Maybe? An infidel's journey to the heartland.

I used to like Australian Rules Football (Aussie Rules Footy) but now I don't. By not liking the game or having a favourite team, I was able to record elements of a grand final event at Collingwood's Victoria Park home ground with dispassion.

Fans will know which match this was. Others won't care. People who hate footy may still find beauty in these images.

At the end of this lens, you'll discover a situation of extraordinary irony that this fascinating field trip occasioned.

On my way, passing Victoria Park Station.

A poignant scene of past pleasures.

Even inside the ground, business is thin.

How can one eat, at a time like this?

The tension mounts.

The ecstatic release of a timely goal!

If this board could talk...

The great leveller.

A fan kindly strikes his best pose.

Fans take their allegiance seriously.

Pure mateship in the wintry sunshine.

Is this where Leonardo got his inspiration?

Alas! The game is lost.

And now, the extaordinary irony!

Life imitates art!

That's me in the centre, holding the stubbie of beer! I spotted a photographer from the newspaper and felt I should strike a suitably mournful pose. This shot appeared the next day! Was I wrong to do such a thing, or is it wildly funny? Tell me what you think below.

Give it to me with both barrels!

Ah yes, I remember that day very well indeed. I was watching it at home in Queensland and absolutely shattered by the result! Everyone up here was ecstatic!

hahaha! Really? classic! really good photos and great lens. A story well told. You look mildly disappointed but even that's in stark contrast to the young lady to your left. Piss funny and not wrong at all.

I love the paper clipping! That was good. All of the game commentary and I didn't see a single player!

Hi Paul. A great lens with interesting pix and a humorous slant on our great game. It reminds me a little of Keith Dunstan in "The Sun" with his AFL=Anti-Football League! A thumbs up and lensrolled to my Richmond Football Club Lens.

Why isn't this lens in the Wander Downunder Group (/groups/downunder). I happen to know that a lens on the Crows will be in that group in the next day or so - put 'em out of bounds on the full by submitting yours. Please.

Thank you, Jaguar Julie. Ironically, it's one of the best shots ever taken of me. My mum hung a colour copy of it in her lounge room! Thanks very much for stopping by. P. :)

Hmmm, an interestingly colorful pictorial lens -- love that shot of you that made it into the newspaper!

Fascinating portrait of local colour. I'm keen for the denouement though. What and where is the situation of extraordinary irony? Thanks for the lens. Always enjoyable.

Well, I thought it was all rather good. And I don't like football either!
