FIFA Ballon d’Or

The FIFA Ballon d'Or is the most prestigious award given to a football player in the world. The award was instituted by FIFA in 2010 for both men and women players and awarded annually at FIFA head quarters in Zurich. The award is given based on the votes received to each player. The persons who are eligible for voting include coaches , captains of international football teams and football journalists around the world.

Earlier the French football association were giving an award for the best footballer in European league and was named as Ballon d'Or which means golden ball. FIFA was giving out an award named FIFA world player of the year annually. Eventhough FIFA was the world famous association their award didn't gain popularity when compared to French association's Ballon d'Or. Thus under the leadership of FIFA in 2010 both these awards were merged into one and named as FIFA Ballon d'Or award. The maiden award in 2010 was bagged by the golden boy of Argentina Mr. Lionel Messi.

Federation Internationale de Association (FIFA) and France Football have revealed the names of the candidates for the men’s FIFA Ballon d’Or 2013 awards. The football experts from the FIFA Football Committee and a group of experts from France Football jointly selected the 23 candidates. FIFA and France Football will announce the names of the three men who have received the most number of votes in early December 2013.The final selection will be made by the captains , head coaches of the men’s national teams and by international media representatives selected by France Football. The award will be presented at the Zurich Kongresshaus on 13 January 2014.

Who will kiss on the trophy ?

It is interesting that a lot of players from Bayern Munich football club and Barcelona football club are there in the final list. Both the teams were well played in Champions Trophy as well as the respective leagues in their country. Bayern Munich was the champions in UEFA Champions league in 2013. Their monopoly in German Football league continued in 2013 also. Franck Ribery lead the Munich team in the game in most of these two championships. Eventhough the team ousted before reaching the finals of UEFA championship , Barcelona FC became the Spanish football league champions of 2013. As usual the credit of this title again goes to the scintillating performance of Argentinean striker Lionel Messi. It is interesting that only one player from Borusia Dortmund which is the runners up in UEFA champions league of 2013 is included in the list of probables for FIFA Ballon d'Or. Also only one goal keeper is included in the list who is the German national team goal keeper Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich.

The final selection will be tough as the FIFA Ballon d’Or record breaker and defending holder Lionel Messi , world’s most paid football player Gareth Bale, European Footballer of the year Franck Ribéry and former Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo are in the contestant's list. In my opinion the last years Bayern Munich’s front warrior Franck Ribéry and the man behind Barcelona FC’s dreamy achievements Lionel Messi will come out at the first two positions. Still Cristiano has also a chance as his performance in Spanish football league championship was wonderful in this year. At last it may become a tug of war between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
