Who Will Lift the World Cup trophy?

Can Spain Lift the Trophy Again?

Top Contenders

Though 32 teams are participating in 2014’s mega event but not all of them are capable of lifting the trophy of their dreams.

The biggest contenders of the World Cup are the current World Champions and number 1 ranked team, Spain. Spaniards had had the reputation of being under achievers at the world stage till they conquered all and sundry with their imperious playing style to become world champions in South Africa. Spain has a wonderfully gifted team and has won the last three major tournaments in which they have taken part including euro 2008 and 2012 in addition to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. While the team wasn’t able to stir the same magic in the Confederations Cup played in Brazil last year, many pundits still feel that players like Iniesta, Xavi, Xabi Alonso and Iker Casillas can lead the country to its second World Cup title.

The other favorite for becoming champion is the host nation of the World Cup, the most successful football nation in the world, the team known for its dazzling and attacking style i.e. Brazil. Many pundits feel that Brazil have a great chance of clinching back the World Cup after a wait for 12 years because the team not only has attacking flair but also has a very balanced and high quality defence- an element missing in Brazilian teams in the past three World Cups. With a robust and passionate crowd encouraging them every step of the way, the Brazilian team would take some stopping.

The German side is packed with talented players all along the park and it is for this reason that Germany go into the World Cups as one of the favorites to win the grandest prize of them all. Joachim Low would have to make his side play to their true potential though if they want to put up an effective challenge for the title.

Can Vincent Kompany lead his team to World Cup glory?

Dark Horses

Belgium are considered well down in the pecking order when it comes to the list of favorites with teams like Argentina and Netherlands being given more favorable odds than the Western European country. However, a look at their squad, their performances in the World Cup Qualifiers and their ranking in the FIFA standings is proof enough of the heights that Belgium can reach in this World Cup. With high quality players like Vincent Kompany, Eden Hazard, Axel Witsel and Romelu Lukaku in the form of their lives, the Belgians would give any team a run for their money in the World Cup. Belgium may not be able to win the World Cup in Brazil but they are surely capable of springing a few surprises and thus, remain one of the teams to watch out for this summer.

Hopefully, it would be a great tournament with exciting and breathtaking matches and classic finishes, exceptional goals, dramatic defending, attacks, counterattacks and all that we expect from the beautiful game.

Supporting Germany. But if France knock them out somehow (a big if), I will be cheering for Argentina. Think they can reach the finals at least even with such a disjointed team that has no midfield.

You from the US? I loved the spirit with which the US players played in that Belgium game.
