FLEE THE COUNTRY. THE WORLD CUP COMETH

Updated on May 6, 2011

BEWARE THE FLAGS.

Have you noticed? All around us the flag of that most bizarre of Patron Saints, ST GEORGE, are fluttering wherever you move. From beat up old cars to double tenements and everywhere else it seems we are awaiting an English triumph in a world competition. It must be so because we won the Cricket that the vast majority did not even know it was on .The World Cup is different because it has been highjacked.

I am a Football man but I cannot bear to see the ways our countrymen, and women respond to the game. Fanned by red top tabloids and TV and even Radio, the game is no longer the thing ,only the event.

COUNTRY MADNESS is the only way to describe it. I grew up when to wear an England shirt meant something and I can remember the first time I was able to gain qualification to wear a white sirt with the 3 Lions as the uniform of my then employers, THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION. Pride was a real feeling then!

NOWADAYS THE SICK, THE LAME, THE HALT AND ESPECIALLy THE OBESE OF BOTH SEXES PARADE THE STREETS IN THE ONCE REVERED SHIRT. THEY ARE THE SYMBOLS OF SADNESS FOR A BYGONE AGE WHEN SUBSTANCE TRIUMPHED OVER STYLE UNLIKE TODAY.

OUR ESCAPE.

So , in no doubt a vain effort to escape the rubbish and to be able to enjoy the Competition for it"s own sake, we will repair to our Turkish bolt hole ,well away from the gross wearers of the once revered shirts who will bestride the streets of Enland till our return. We will take care to keep clear of the tourist areas around us which will no doubt be festooned with English families looking for lager and chips for 99p as they waddle around in beach shorts and white lion crested shirts.

The tournament has been hijacked by the ultra commercial world, but there will still be good football to watch on TV in Turkey, and well away from the things that now debase the game. For a start I will not have to listen to innane commentry and punditory. I cannot wait for it to start. Then when we return a day or two after the final, we can be sure ST GEORGE will no longer be visible, till the next time of course and that will take us to Europe 2 whole years away. Bliss..
