Great Numbers

The Falcon tennis team has added to its numbers since last season. At practice each day, almost every court is full. The athletes are learning the game, and having fun doing it. All of the team's hard work is paying off as each member is improving, and finding success on the court.

On March 9th, the Falcons traveled to the other end of the county to take on the Rams of Starmount. Being the first match of the season, expectations were low. Well, the Falcons were clicking on all cylinders as the team made quick work of its opponents in a 7-2 victory.

Singles winners were Lance Kennedy, Jonathan Bowman, Yannis El-Abbouni, Tyler Upchurch and Winston Fleming. These Falcons stormed through the sets and won 5 out of the 6 possible points during the single matches.

Doubles are a best of three matches. Falcon winners were the team of Lance Kennedy and Jonathan Bowman, as well as Avery Adams and Tyler Upchurch. With the match already decided based on the five wins in the single matches, winning two out of three double matches was just icing on the cake.

One week later, on the 16th of March the Falcons surrendered a match to the Rams at home. Everything that had gone right for the Falcons a week earlier seemed to tilt the other direction on this day at home.

Several of the matches went to tie-breakers with the Falcons coming out on the wrong end of a close match. Lance Kennedy and Jonathan Bowman were able to team up to win the lone doubles match for the Falcons while Lance, Jonathan and Winston were the only winners of singles matches. A previous 7-2 victory was turned around to a 4-5 defeat.

In the latest match against the Eagles of Surry Central, the Falcons ran up against a seasoned group of tennis players. Surry Central is always a competitive bunch in tennis. This year, the Eagles are off to a 2-0 start with victories over North Surry and Forbush.

The Eagles controlled the match from the very beginning, and closed out the Falcons comfortably in the top four spots. However, in the fifth spot Lance Kennedy took his opponent to a tie-breaker before losing 10-7. In doubles action, Lance and Jonathan stole a match away from the Eagles (9-7) to prevent the shutout.

From an observer standout it may look like a simple defeat for the Falcons, but the level of tennis has improved for the team. This team is trending up, so come out an support the Falcon tennis team as it looks to defeat the Sauras of South Stokes on Thursday at home.

Grooms

Lefty

Ian Grooms is reminiscent of John McEnroe with his left-handed approach to the net. Subtle differences of demeanor, maturity and language use separate Ian for the better. Ian is an academic standout as a senior at Forbush High School.

Yannis

Avez-vous jouer au tennis?

Yannis El-Abbouni definitely does play tennis. Yannis is a welcome addition to the tennis team. With a great personality and a love for the game he has helped to focus the team on improving its skill level.

Clark

Brad

There are a couple of proud parents out there that call this young man their own. Brad Clark is top notch in every aspect of his life. Coach Tuck is living the dream with some of the personalities on this team, and Brad is no exception. Brad's laid back approach to tennis is demonstrated in his photo as he casually places the ball back across the net.
