Falcons Pull Away from Golden Eagles

Updated on May 20, 2015

The Lady Falcons came out of the gates quickly in the 2nd round match against the Golden Eagles of East Davidson. A crafty corner kick played short ended with a Michaela Stone goal into the top corner of the net to give the Falcons an early 1-0 lead. Two teammates passed up open shots at the top of the box before Stone placed her shot out of the reach of the Eagle keeper.

Despite the quick goal and overwhelming possession advantage, the Falcons could not build on its lead. A couple of good chances narrowly missed as the gritty defense of the Eagles held on by a thread. Shannon Holden shook the goal with a one-timer off the bottom of the crossbar and Nancy Rios hit one into the outside of the net to keep the pressure on the Eagles.

Forbush got around the corner at will, but couldn't connect the last pass to get the goal. East Davidson had its chances to even the score. A couple of times the Eagles were able to get behind the Falcon back line and into the box. However, the shot either went wide of the goal or straight to keeper, Jessica Funk. The best chance for the Eagles came from a set piece just outside the box. The Eagles lined up a shot, but it was of little threat to Funk in goal as it sailed high and wide.

With about eight minutes left to go in the match, Forbush was able to put this one away as Shannon Holden placed a one-timer by the Eagle keeper for the 2-0 lead. Minutes later the Falcons added the third and final goal as the Eagles had pushed numbers forward in a desperate attempt to score. Rios found herself wide open at the back post with the ball and an empty net. She calmly tucked the ball into the corner to finish off the scoring.

With the win, the Falcons will march into the third round tonight against the Wolverines of Polk County. Polk County pulled the upset against West Stokes in the 2nd round in penalty kicks. West Stokes was the last team to beat the Falcons back on April 27th, just before playoffs began.

Polk County holds a 16-4 record overall, and is the conference champion from the 1A/2A Western Highlands conference. The match between the Falcons and Wolverines is slated for tonight (Wednesday) at 7pm in Falcon Stadium.

Forbush got in behind the Eagle defense time and time again, largely in part to the play of Macey York who came off the bench to give the team valuable minutes.
