Falcons Start WPAC Tourney with Pair of Aces
The Lady Falcons traveled to Dobson on Friday for the last regular season game of the year. Holding a 9-0 record in the Western Piedmont Athletic Conference, Forbush had already secured the top seed from the conference. However, a loss could've dropped the Falcons in the overall standings of the 2A playoffs; an instance that could affect home field advantage.
Taylor Wooten took the mound for only the second time this season in order to allow Miller to have a night off and to give the Eagles a different look. Wooten performed like she had started every game for the Falcons. Over seven innings, Wooten walked zero batters while striking out four batters. She allowed only one run to come across on a ground out in the bottom of the 7th inning, and held the Eagles to five hits on the game.
At the plate, Wooten led the charge with a deep blast to left in the 5th inning to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Sydney Miller was given the night off, but did make a pinch-hit appearance count in the top of the 7th as she lined a ball down the right field line for 2 RBIs to secure the win for the Falcons.
Marissa Lineberry was a perfect 2 for 2 at the plate with 2 walks; reaching base all four times. A couple of those at-bats were hard fought battles that ended up with a line drive single.
All total, the Falcons had some 18 base runners, but could not get a hit with runners in scoring position. Pitcher, E. Coe kept the Falcons at arms length for most of the night thanks to a couple of outstanding defensive plays by Surry Central.
In the end the Falcons were still too much for the Eagles. The scariest fact of the night is that the Falcons struggled at the plate, but still banged out 11 hits.
The conference tournament starts on Wednesday for the Falcons. The Sauras of South Stokes beat up on the Eagles in the opening round of the WPAC tourney 8-0, so that will be the opponent for the Falcons. The Falcons have beaten the Sauras twice already by a combined score of 22-1, but those stats go out the window in tournament play.
Look for the Sauras to come out swinging in the semi-finals against the Falcons.
