Falcons Tennis Breaks Blackhawks

Updated on March 3, 2016

Four of the Falcons top six tennis players are seniors. Winston Fleming, Avery Adams, Lucas Kennedy and Brad Clark have all seen their fair share of time on the tennis court. This experience proved to be the difference in the match on Monday against the Blackhawks of West Wilkes. On the other side of the net, the Blackhawks were led by a freshman standout in the #1 spot.

It didn't take long for the Falcons to take control of the match. After singles play, the Falcons had only lost one match as Winston Fleming was unable to figure out a way to earn points against the freshman from West Wilkes. Being the #1, Winston gets the other team's top player each and every match. Matt Wilhelm, Forbush's #2 took down his opponent in straight sets, only losing one game in the process. Lance Kennedy, the younger brother of Lucas Kennedy, managed a victory as well.

With the Falcons in the lead (2-1), Avery Adams and Brad Clark shutout their opponents 6-0 6-0 to push the overall lead to 4-1 in favor of the home team. Lucas Kennedy finished up the single matches with a 6-0 6-1 win.

Doubles matches went even better for the Falcons. The Kennedy brothers were too much for their opponents, and the team of Adams and Clark found a quick route to victory to put the match on ice. Team Fleming and Wilhelm almost pulled the sweep of doubles, but lost 6-8.

The final result was 7-2 in favor of the Falcons to give them a 1-0 start to the season.

The win streak was short lived as the Falcons also traveled to Mount Airy to take on the Bears. The Bears are always a talented group, and this year is no exception. The Falcons were bested by a score of 9-0.

The single matches went quickly with Lucas Kennedy being the toughest out, but the Falcons put up a fight in the doubles matches. Two of the matches were close in score to the very end, however the Falcons failed to earn any victories on the day.

The loss drops the Falcons to 1-1 on the season with the next match scheduled to be at West Wilkes on Friday, March 4th.
