Finding the Perfect Summer Camp!

Updated on January 1, 2011

It might be a little bit early to be thinking about summer camps, however at We Did It! We already have planned our camps for 2011. All the details will be available soon through our website. If you decide not to join us, there are several other camps in Calgary. However finding the perfect camp for your child can be a challenge as they tend to fill up really quickly.

There are several different types of camps in the city to select from.

Option 1:Multi-Sport Camps

Multi-sport camps teach children a variety of different sports. These camps are great in that they provide children with new exposure to a variety of different sports. Winsport Canada is a great example of a fabulous organization that offers weekly camps for Children between the ages of 4-13. The company has a large selection of camps that will be bound to take your camper on an adventure that they will never forget!

Option 2: Specialty Camps

Specialty Camps are specific to one particular area of interest. These types of opportunities are limitless and can range from Biking to Reading.

Option 3: Adventure Camps

Adventure Camps are wonderful in that they expose kids to a variety of physical and social activates. Such activates include: Arts and Crafts, Gym Games and Lessons, as well as Field Trips. The camps that will be offered through We Did It! School-Age Society this summer are great examples of this form of camp.

There are a number of considerations to make before making your camp selection. Cost is perhaps one of the more obvious considerations. But you also should look into the quality of the camp. Is this going to be a camp where my child will be able to learn, develop, and have fun at the same time?

As many of you are aware, there is currently a very high need for quality and affordable childcare programs in the city. Finding care in the summer can often be as challenging as finding care during the rest of the year. One of the conflicts in the city is that some of the childcare programs that are out their will choose to close their doors during the summer months. One must question why companies choose to do this as it is during the summer that the year round programs will experience the most revenue. We will be exploring the need for care in future issues. As for now, we can only encourage you to do your research early when it comes to finding the perfect Summer Camp for you and your child.

On a side note, there are no licenses required to operate a summer camp program meaning that research is a very important part of the selection process.

When selecting a camp, it is always a good idea to look for something that focuses on fun and education, and that features staff who are all qualified with at least an early childhood education.

Camps can often be a challenge to find, but persistence, awareness, and research will go a long way towards finding the perfect camp!
