We ponder the question--What is fly fishing ?

One answer would be that fly fishing is a means of capturing fish by the presentation of an artificial lure designed to be a facsimile of a living organism.

A deeper response would be that it is man's innate and spiritual connection with his environment; his adaptation to and survival in that environment by virtue of ingenuously crafting a method by which he can obtain food; and, in more recent human history, the evolution of that pastime into an outdoors recreational activity that humanely utilizes the practice of catch and release.

Ultimately, fly fishing is part and parcel of man's significant and responsible stewardship of planet Earth. It is simultaneously his appreciation for God's abundant favor and a response to the Creator/Provider's request to compassionately care for all living things.

Thanks, James! What a wonderful father-son bonding experiencing fly-fishing must be for you both!

Ironically, while I've tied tens of thousands of flies for many global destinations, I've never fly-fished. Caught a couple of foot-long rainbows by hand-held line while testing my beadhead patterns in an 8-inch deep creek next to my house, but I've never casted a fly. No excuse, whatsoever, but I think it has something to do with growing up in Hawaii and being used to the kinds of fishing there...although, fly fishing is growing increasingly popular over there--trout and bass in freshwater areas, and bonefish along the sandy ocean flats.

Aloha and mahalo for reading and commenting on my hub!

You are correct, that's very deep, but enjoyable and exciting all the same. As soon as I began fly fishing, I didn't look back, it's by far the most exciting form of fishing for me.And now my 11 yr old son too.
