Free Basketball Clipart
Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a physical education teacher at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. There were only 13 original rules to the game and the first basket was a peach basket. However, one problem was that the basket retained its bottom so balls had to be retrieved manually after each "basket". Later a small hole was put in the basket so the ball could be poked out from below with a stick.
The peach baskets were used until the early 1900s when they were replaced by metal hoops with backboards and the game evolved to the game we know today.
The first league was formed in 1946 and its name was changed in 1949 to the National Basketball Association. (NBA)
The game of basketball has become popular around the world and one thing that helped make that happen was an Olympic rule change in 1992 which allowed NBA players to play in the Olympics. The team of players that represented the U.S. that year was loaded with so many stars, (Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, just to name a few) that it came to be known as the "Dream Team."
