Use this guide to help you turn your sports knowledge into cold hard cash through free sports contests and games with real cash prizes.

Sports betting and gambling has been part of the culture around athletic contests for generations. Players who are not able to play the sport they love at the level of the professional or college level feel like they are part of the game when they place bets on the outcome of the contest. Fantasy sports contests have become a vehicle for the serious and casual sports fans to participate in sports betting on a socially acceptable platform.

For many of us, especially in this economy, it is difficult to "get into the game" at the level of putting money down. Thanks to the internet, there are several free to play contests that allow players to "bet" on sports without actually wagering any money. All of the games and contests listesd in this guide are free to play and offer cash or other prizes to the winners.

Covers.com Streak Survivor Contest

Covers.com is a sports betting information website that runs a free streak style contest with a top prize of $100,000. Each day you can make one pick from a list of games that Covers.com chooses. If you get your pick correct, your streak goes up. If you get it wrong, your streak resets to zero. You do not have to pick everyday, but you must pick once every six days to keep your streak alive.

The ultimate goal is to build a streak of 24 correct picks for the overall grand prize of $100,000. Other prizes are available for smaller streaks. See the table to the right for a breakdown of the prizes.

Only having the option of picking one game a day makes this contest one of my favorites. It doesn't take a lot of time and it is a contest that a smart sports fan has a reasonable shot at winning. My longest streak was seven in a row and my girlfriend had 11 in a row during basketball season. We have found that during basketball season it was much easier to find a good pick than it has been during baseball season.

Many of the picks are not just picking which team will win. Basketball and football include picking ATS (against the spread), which makes Covers.com the closest thing to actually betting on sports on this list.

ESPN Streak for the Cash

ESPN Streak for the Cash is one of the most popular free to play sports streak games on the internet. It's been around for years and has thousands, if not millions, of players around the world. The object of the contest is to build the longest streak of correct picks in a row during the contest period. As of August 2011, prizes are awarded on a monthly basis for the longest streak and for the most wins during the month. The top prize is $50,000 for the longest streak of the month and the player who has the most wins for the month receives $2,500.

The Stash is a promotion going on that adds $50,000 each month to the longest streak prize if the player reaches a streak of 27 or higher. If no player breaches the 27 streak threshold, the $50,000 rolls over to the next month. At the time of writing, the Stash is currently at $400,000, meaning that if the winner of the longest streak for August 2011 has a streak of 27 or higher, they would win $450,000. Not too shabby for making a few picks.

Sports Picker

Sports Picker is a great game that can be played on Facebook or as an iOS app. I personally play it on my iPhone all of the time. The concept is that you join "challenges" which are essentially pools, and compete against other players for prizes. So far I have yet to win a prize, but my girlfriend took 2nd in a 3 day MLB contest and won a $15 Amazon gift card, which she received the day after the competition closed. They run sponsored challenges for NFL, NCAA, MLB, Soccer, NBA, and NHL.

One of the cool features it that you can create your own pools and invite your friends. You can decide on a prize for the winner and Sports Picker handles all of the scoring. You could have a one on one battle and make the loser buy dinner or drinks or just play for bragging rights among your friends.

MLB.com Beat the Streak

MLB.com (Major League Baseball) hosts a contest each year called Beat the Streak. The object of the game is to pick one major league baseball player each day who you think will get a hit. If your player gets a hit, your streak goes up. If your player fails to get a hit, your streak resets to zero. The first person to reach a 57 game hitting streak will win $5,600,000. The contest starts on opening day and concludes on the last day of the regular season. If no player reaches the 57 game hitting streak mark, the player who has the longest streak at the end of the contest wins $10,000.

MLB.com Home Run Beat the Streak

MLB.com's Home Run Beat the Streak is a similar concept to their original game listed about. You pick one player per day who you think will hit a home run. If your player hits a home run, your streak continues. If he doesn't, your streak starts over. The top prize is $10,000 for the player who finishes the season with the longest streak (11 or more games). Not quite the $5,600,000, but for one pick a day it's a pretty good deal.

MLB.com's Fast Relief Beat the Streak

MLB.com recycled their free contest again, this time for pitchers. Pick one pitcher a day who you think will record a save. If you're correct, your streak continues. If not, it's set back to zero. The top prize is $10,000 for the season and the winner must have a streak of 15 or more to claim the prize.

Wow .. I forgot about this thread ..

I guess it was 4 weeks ago that Larry Ness went 22-1 at Covers. There is a new guy that is the talk of the town this week though, and he went 9-0 with his NFL picks ..

His name escapes me at the moment, but he sure is a handsome devil!

      Lol
