Free summer activities

It is summertime and around my house that means it is time to get outside and do something.

But I don't have any money, you reply.....That's ok this hub is about free summer activities.

How about a trip to the park.

Most towns have a public park, that have a clean playground for the kids to play on. what I like about the park is that you are outside enjoying a scenic view and you can stay long enough that the kids will get the exercise they need.

If you need to find out where the closest public park is use Google Search and type public parks in your-towns-name USA or you can always call city hall.

Things to do in a park

  • The Monkey Bars
  • The slide
  • Take a walk
  • The swings
  • The jungle gym
  • Walk around and clean up any trash
  • Picnick

Picknicking in the park

Most all your public parks have a picnick area, which is usually a concrete table that has seating for 4 and a trash can nearbye.

You can pack a healthy lunch for yourself and the kids and enjoy being outside eating.

Please remember to not litter and clean up after yourself, since the parks are free it is our responsibility to help keep them clean.

A example of a healthy lunch for a picnick

  • Turkey Sandwiches served on wheat bread with mustard only
  • Pop a Large bag of Salt-Free Pop-Corn
  • Bring Some fresh fruit Like Apple or Oranges
  • Drink Water
  • If you will put the pop corn in your cooler right after you pop it at home it will be warm when you eat it.

Also remember that you need to wear some sunscreen if you are gonna be in the sun for over an hour and re-apply it every hour you are outside.

I learned this the hard way after I had put on 70 SPF sunscreen and still got a sunburn bad enough to send me to the doctor, I had to take antibiotics and had to apply expensive sylvadine cream because I didn't re-apply the sunscreen every hour or so.

Use bugspray - It is no fun being outside if you are getting bitten by bugs or insects, I would recommend using Deep woods Off, it is odorless but will keep the creepy crawlers away.

Next up - try the library

Public Libraries are free to use and in my opinion most do not get used nearly enough.

Cool things about my public library

  • They have DVD movies you can check out for free
  • Books
  • Free Computers to use (yes they have high speed Internet)
  • Many people are going there to stay cool during this heatwave

Our public library is awesome and people of all ages should take advantage of the things mentioned above.

People pay good money to rent DVDs,to have high speed internet that alone should be enough for you to take a trip to your public library.

Also if you have younger kids it is teaching them a resource that they will use the rest of their lives.

I think that the public library is a must do this summer.

Swimming is always good in the summer

I have added this to my hub because of the comment from my fellow writer & online friend Sunshine625.. you should follow her,she always leaves good feedback and even promotes other peoples hubs on twitter and other sites.

While swimming for free isn't available in every area, it is in many areas.

I live near a creek, it is about 3ft deep and you can bring a raft and float in the slow moving water,if you don't want to float downstream you can hang a leg off your float and just sit under the shade and relax. If you haven't tried it before I cannot begin to tell you how much fun this is.

Also it does have deeper holes in the creek that you can swim in, on a normal day there will be 4-5 people out there swimming and floating around.

If you are bringing your small kids around for the swimming please be careful and make sure they have some arms floats, with me safety always comes first.

Swimming is also a good option if you are overweight and trying to lose weight because it is low impact once you are in the water you aren't putting any pressure at all on your joints.

Adopt a mile of road to keep clean

I know what you are thinking, that dosen't sound to fun to me.

Remember fun is

  • A state of mind
  • Contagious
  • Doing something good for others gives you a good feeling

You can walk once or twice a week and pick up aluminum cans, trash and garbage from the side of the road, not only are you doing something good for your community,if you get your kids to help, it gives you time to talk with them and it truly is fun.

You get the benefits of exercising, spending quality time with your family and you are helping your community, that alone should be enough to give it a try.

You never know what you are going to find, usually it is just the normal platic botlles and aluminum cans but I have found money, watches, cell phones and many other items since I have been doing the adopt a mile plan.

With the price of aluminum being so high over a period of 3 months you can accumulate many aluminum cans and then take them to your local recycling center and spend that extra money on something nice for yourself or your kids.

More importantly it shows your neighbors that you care about your community, and also teaches your children the benefits of thinking of others.

Thanks for stopping by my hub I hope you enjoyed it and I look forward to talking with you in the comments below.

Good advice. I had friends who borrowed movies from the library all the time! I thought that was brilliant. My favorite free activity is visiting museums (when they have free events).

An addition to the swimming-there are sprinklers too. I love reading. And walking is great exercise. There are good children's games that are rarely played anymore like hopscotch and double dutch. No money necessary.

Even just going for a long walk can be an idea - it can be from your front door, or you can drive a little distance and do a walk in someone else's neighbourhood. Be sure to pack water, snacks, and possibly a lunch. Great tips earning you a vote-up and useful.

    Hey there manthy,

I think going to the park and a day at the library are two activities that are fading from our culture and need a serious comeback. Very useful hub, Matt

Beautiful hub Manthy. Reminds me of our days in northern Virginia, biking the really great bike trails they have there, picnicking in the parks in the area and visiting the public library nearby the place we lived at that time. The public library is a great place as you mention in your hub.

Hey manthy! The library has always been my favorite free fun activity - winter, spring, summer or fall. And while I'm here I'll get my plug in. Mr. President, I think all the libraries in this country should be FREE!! (Just in case he's reading this.)
