Marian (aka Azure11) has been playing golf for over 20 years and has volunteered as a marshal at quite a number of golf tournaments.

Graeme McDowell

Graeme McDowell is an Irish golfer who was born in 1979 in Portrush, Northern Ireland. Since turning professional in 2002 he had a relatively quiet time playing tournament golf although he did win tournaments on the European Tour in the first few years after becoming a professional golfer.

Although he did play in the 2008 European Ryder Cup team, his major year as a golfer which brought him into the public spotlight was 2010 when he won the US Open and was instrumental in winning the Ryder Cup for Europe. Both these events propelled him from being just another tour golfer to being a publicly recognised sportsman around the world.

2010 - G-Mac's Year

In interviews Graeme McDowell has said that he will always look back on 2010 as being an incredible year for him. To win the US Open was a dream come true and then to top that off by being the golfer who holed the last putt in the Ryder Cup to win it for Europe was a moment he will never forget. The celebrations on the 17th Green at Celtic Manor were something that just wouldn't happen in a strokeplay individual event.

In 2011 Graeme McDowell took a bit of a dip in his form. He had changed sponsors and golf clubs late in 2010 but obviously it can only be speculation that this had anything to do with a form change. He won the US open with Callaway and subsequently changed to Srixon.

Although he has had some good form for particular rounds in tournaments, he has also had some very bad rounds in the same tournaments. So for 2011 he knows he needs to be more consistent. he has the game in him and wants to be world number 1 and with some improvements the golf rankings are wide open and he can surely make it.

2011 - Trying to Capitalise on 2010

Whenever you have won a major, it is always difficult to follow that with a year that is as successful. GMac himself said that he went out and enjoyed the year of being the US Open Champion but knew that it was going tobe a hard one to follow. Added to that he changed his club sponsor from Callaway to Srixon, and although he would obviously never say it himself, it seemed like it took him a while to get used to the new clubs.

In 2011 McDowell played 16 events and his best placed official event was a 3rd in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in January of 2011. He also placed 3rd in the unoffical event - The World Cup Championships - HSBC Champions - in November of 2011. However, his form did take some dips and he missed the cut on 6 occasions.

However, his prize money for 2011 was not to be sniffed at and he took part in some high earning events which gave him a total prize money for 2011 from golf tournaments of approximately $1,780,000. Obviously with sponsorship money on top, this all adds up to a tidy sum. But, that was a big drop from his earnings of 2010 which came to $3.6m from tournaments alone.

2012 - McDowell Makes the Ryder Cup Team

Even though Graeme was a massive part of the Ryder Cup Team in 2010 there was obviously no guarantee that he would make the team again in 2012 as it is all down to current performance and rankings. McDowell struggled a bit through 2011 and early in 2012 to return to his previous good form and in fact has not won a tournament since the Andalucia Valderrama Masters in October 2010.

He has had 2 second places in 2012 so far and with prize money totalling around $1.6m up to and including the Wold Matchplay Championships where he was beaten into second place by Nicolas Colsaerts, his earnings and possibly also his rankings are looking like they may increase for 2012. This increase in form, good level of earnings and more consistent level of high finishes was enough to get him into the 2012 Ryder Cup Team again in September 2012.

Graeme McDowell - In Private

G-Mac seems to keep his private life that - very private. There have been a few rumours about Graeme McDowell's girlfriend but nothing very concrete and he hasn't given anything away about his private life. it's fair enough, everyone is entitled to their private life, but no doubt that there are a lot of women out there that would be interested to know if Graeme McDowell has a girlfriend!

Update June 2012 - So, it seems that Graeme McDowell's girlfriend is now common knowledge as she attended the wedding of Darren Clarke with him recently. Her name is Kristin Stape and she is a beautiful dark haired interior designer from the US.

As for G-Mac himself, I can vouch that he is a very nice guy indeed. I met him at the Race to Dubai pro-am tournament and was marshalling with his group around the course and he took time to chat with us all and have photos taken. He was also giving tips to the amateur golfers in the group and really helping them out. So I for one wish G-Mac lots of success in the coming years.

If you do want to know what Graeme McDowell is up to then you must check out his Twitter account which he updates regularly and has a lot of banter with the other golfers through. Find him at @Graeme_McDowell

Graeme McDowell Gets Engaged!

On 22 November 2012, McDowell is in Dubai for the finale of the Race to Dubai and the DP World Championship and he announces that he and Kristin Stape are engaged. He shared this picture of them on Facebook, cruising around the Dubai shoreline (I think! it looks familiar).

Congrats to Graeme and Kristin!

Thanks Cogerson - in interviews he has said that he doesn't think he will win again this year so if he does then that would indeed be great for his profile and put him up the rankings!
