Growing Technologies in Cricket

Do you Know What Cricket is:

  • If you are not familiar with cricket, well : Cricket is an outdoor game with 11 players each. The format of 20 overs each (T20) has made the stuff more fascinating and adorable to watch and a probable contender for next Olympic Games as well. For the betterment, fairness and beauty of the game, technological advancement is an additional fervor to the sport.


  • The increasing use of technology in cricket has made the sport a wonderful experience for the TV viewers worldwide. As the premier institution of the sport worldwide, the ICC (International Cricket Council) makes the DRS (Decision Review System) compulsory in all international matches in future except few countries in particular India having some credibility doubts about some of them, we take a quick look at the commonly used technologies in cricket that are really a treat to watch to make the Game much fair and assist the umpires.


  • Cricket in USA has recently sparked interest with an all stars tournament at LA, Houston and New York.

HAWK EYE

  • Thinking? Oh its not the eye of a hawk in its genial meaning. Its one of the excessively used technologies on cricket field now a days to trace the trajectory of the ball, it is used by commentators and broadcasters for a long time now to help viewers know if correct decisions were given for Leg Before Wicket (LBW) appeals. It also shows the degree by which the ball has turned or remained straightened. It clealy shows off spin, doosra, leggie and reverse swing if seen prior to a match, batsmen can take on an analysis on the opponent's bowlers too.


  • I personally think hawk eye is the best technology in Cricket introduced since ages. It must be however accurately monitored.


  • This technology predicts the path of the ball after impact on the pitch, using a series of cameras placed at the periphery of the whole cricket ground. It was a part of the Decision Review System (DRS) in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. However, it is not 100% accurate. According to the ICC's latest decision, the use of ball-tracker as a decision-making aid will depend on bilateral agreement between the participating members. India usually avoids DRS. if the probability of this technology predicting the ball movement, it will be a permanent feature in all matches.

SNICKO

  • Allan Plaskett , an English computer scientist invented snicko based on the simple effect of sound. A snickometer is used in televising cricket to graphically analyse sound and video, and show whether a fine noise, or snick, occurs as ball passes bat in faint edges. Because, a woody or a timber clicked sound has a different frequency than that of the ball hitting the glove or just missing anything while en route to the wicket keeper.

  • Snicko is great in judging the sound effect of bat touching the ball and giving over a doubtful decision.

HOT SPOT

  • Hot Spot ball tracking technology that heavily depends on infrared cameras that detect the heat signature effects of ball impact on body/bat. For instance, wherever the ball hits the batsman, the heat signature of that particular spot changes to white or grey scale value of higher orders – creating a Hot Spot at the body/bat. I It is widely appreciated by players for its accuracy but is not a regular part of the ICC's UDRS due its expensive implementation and sensitive equipment that is not affordable by all grounds of various countries. It came under severe scrutiny and criticism after the famous ashes series 2013. As some edges could not be detected by the use of wax on bats. It is being improved.


  • Some say that applying some kind of wax/lotion reduces the effect of judgement by hot spot. That's the reason this thermal imaging based technology needs further innovation/revamp. If improved to a greater degree,It is particularly helpful in judging faint edges and close bat-pad LBW shouts. Indian Captain MS Dhoni has been very critical of this technology and raised his concern and stressed upon the improvement for its reliability.

ULTRA SLOW MOTION Cameras

  • This is a relatively newer technology that uses of high-speed cameras which captures live footage and then the result is reproduced it in an ultra slow motion format. The ultra slow motion is helpful in defining if a delivery touched the bat while en route to wicket keeper or pads. Very Helpful in decision making about catches and LBWs for the third umpire.


  • The use of slow motion has really made the game interesting and watchful for worldwide Cricket maniacs. They love to watch the clarity and fairness of decision making of Umpires. Thia technology is said and expected to prevail up to a great deal in coming years.
  • Live Communication between TV umpire and ground umpire was also inculcated in recently concluded ODI World cup 2015 in Australia and New Zealand.
