How to Catch Big Catfish - Best Spinning Open Faced Reels

Updated on October 7, 2011

Open Faced Spinning Reels for Catching Catfish

There are lots of good options as far as reels go for catching big catfish. I prefer a bait caster for big catfish and a closed face for smaller cats. That being said, I will fish with about anything available if I don't have any of my fishing equipment with me and the opportunity to fish comes up. It doesn't happen very often but sometimes when I travel and I am not in my fully stocked "fishing van" this happens. Yes, you read that right " Fishing Van", I love my fishing van, but that is another story. We are here to talk about which open face spinning reels I would take after big catfish. Let me say here you can spend as much money as you want on fishing equipment. If you are willing to spend the money there is a a piece of fishing equipment to buy. To enjoy fishing you don't need a $300 reel. This list of open faced spinning reels is by no means all of the choices, it is not even close so if you don't see your favorite reel in the list please let us know in the comments below.

The Bass Pro's Cat Buster Open Face Spinning Reel is an affordable option for going after big catfish on a budget. It actually is offered in a rod and reel combo for $39.99. The combo is available in 3 kinds. The lighter reel with 7" medium heavy rod, The medium reel with 8' medium heavy rod or the heavy edition with the 10' medium heavy rod. All are a great choice for catfish. Matter of fact on Gone Fishin' Club my drawing prize for January 2011 was one of these reels.

The spool and handle are crafted of machined and anodized aluminum to give these reels superior strength without adding weight you don't want..These reels will pull in the Big Cats as well as anything from bull reds to sailfish you happen to come across when you aren't catfishing., These reels are a great value so if you are looking for an affordable reel that will hold up under pressure this is a winner. It has a one year warranty from Bass Pro Shops so you can fish worry free. Tip here would be to save your package and your receipt, I advise doing this for all fishing equipment. I know it is a hassle but well worth it when you go to carry things back. The customer service people are always nicer if you have the box or package and a receipt.

Spell Check

By the way, Tip, if you are in Alabama and you want to buy the Daiwa  Exceler 5000T reel it is spelled different there. I have no room to talk, even with spell check on my computer I just keep going. My kids finally told me that is what those little wavy red lines under my words mean, brilliant. My question is if they can put that little red line under my bad spellings why can't they just fix them and let me keep talking about fishing?

Ocean Master OM80

My Ending Comments

Well I hope that gives you some idea of what you are looking for in an open face spinnig reel to chase big cats with, like I said before if I didn't answer your question or you have a favorite reel I missed I will be glad to check it out and add it here. Better yet if you have a great pic of you reel and a fish you caught with it send it to me at Gone Fishin Club. If you aren't a member yet please go to and sign up now.

All prices and information shown here is based on information I got from visiting fellow fishermen and Bass Pro Shops, all of their prices are subject to change or be more or less in your local area. eBay and yard sales are another very good source of deals on fishing equipment. I have also bought fishing equipment on Craigslist. It is a good source for used boats also. I look forward to your comments and answering any questions I can.
