Is Knowsh0n Moreno a Top Fantasy Football Running Back

Updated on September 7, 2014

The 2013 season was an incredible run for the Denver broncos. They had a record setting quarterback. The amount of offensive output that Peyton Manning was responsible for also trickled down to all of the other positions on the offense. The player that seemed to get the biggest reward from Manning’s record-breaking season was Knowshon Moreno.

Brief History

A highly touted running back from The University of Georgia, Moreno was the number twelve pick by the Denver Broncos in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft. The young back came out of college before his junior season after having run for over 1300 yards in his freshman season. Then Moreno came back in his sophomore year to rush for 1400 yards. At the time, those statistics ranked Moreno as one ten running backs in The University of Georgia history, also leading to exceptionally high expectations at the next level. Has Moreno lived up to the hype?

Rushing Stats

Moreno has a career rushing average of 4.1 yards per carry, which is a decent average for an NFL running back. Moreno does not have great breakaway speed, which means that he is not going to give you long touchdown runs. Moreno is a possession rusher, meaning that he is good at helping the offense continue its drive. For many running backs that is something that is very difficult. Moreno is also very reliable with the ball because in his five seasons in the NFL he only fumbled eight times.

Receiving Stats

Receiving is Moreno’s strongest asset as a football player. Moreno’s career average is 8.1 yards per reception, and he has scored nine touchdowns. He is also a very good pass blocker that can help the young quarterback Ryan Tannehill in passing situations.

Moreno Is Injury Prone

Moreno is starting his sixth season of his career. Through the first five seasons, Moreno has averaged twelve games per season, playing in every game in his rookie season and last season. The first thought is to say the Moreno is injury prone, but he has only missed twenty games in his career, for a twenty-seven year old back that is outstanding. In comparison, Darren McFadden of The Oakland Raider missed 29 games due to injury but McFadden is considered one of the top talents in the NFL.

Moreno is an above average receiver coming out of the backfield. The Dolphins backfield has two strong backs that include Moreno. With average NFL type, breakaway speed Moreno is a better option at catching the ball out of the backfield then he is as a runner. He will have some games that will make him look like a great runner, but he has proven over the length of his career that he is a better receiver then a rusher. From a fantasy perspective he is a good number two running back that will average ten points a week.
