JV Softball with First Home Game
The routine for the junior varsity softball team has been to get dressed for the game, warmup, and then go home. Needless to say that the rain hasn't made any friends as of late.
On Wednesday, however, the JV Falcons got a chance to play. The Raiders of Reagan made the trip down the road from Pfafftown to makeup the JV game that was postponed from last week. In this game, the Falcons had a tough go of it as the batters had to face the same pitcher from Reagan that the varsity team faced last week at Reagan.
In the early going, the Falcons had trouble shaking off the rust from not getting to play any games. The Raiders capitalized on a couple of mental/physical errors by the infield and took an early 1-0 lead.
As the game wore own the Falcons were able to gain confidence at the plate. A Falcon rally allowed the girls to tie the score up at 1 run apiece. Things looked to be turning around for the Falcons, but the team continued to make defensive miscues. That combined with a little bad luck caused the Falcons to surrender a couple of additional runs. On back-to-back plays the Falcon defense was unable to record an out after making a good play. Caiti Mickles knocked down a comeback to the mound, but couldn't recover quick enough to get an out. Casey Brown then followed with a great play in the 5-6 hole, but her throw home to cut down the lead runner pulled Collins off the plate.
The Falcons put forth a better effort in the final innings, but could not get over the hump offensively to get back into the game. On this day, the Falcons dropped the game to push its record to 0-2 on the season. Both games were played against stiff, 4A competition.
A tough loss, but at least the team got some time on the field. Look for improvement from these young players over the course of the season.
Get the Sign
Caiti Mickles got the ball for this one and pitched a good game. With a tuned up defense, this team could shutdown the offense of its opponents in future games.
Ready to Hit
Davis Ann plays shortstop for the Falcons. Pictured here getting the sign from Coach Long, Davis Ann prepares herself for her first plate appearance in the game against the Reagan Raiders.
Which aspect of the game vs Reagan needs the most attention at practice?
Making the Play
Anna Doub holds down the position at first base. Getting the out at first base and making sure that the runner on third base doesn't creep home is just part of the job.
Catcher, Alexis Collins is focused on her duties in between innings during the junior varsity game on Wednesday.
