Dallas Golfer Jordan Spieth Congratulated By Olympian Lindsey Vonn Sunday Night
Golfer Jordan Spieth became not only the second player in history to win his third grand slam before turning twenty four Sunday, but he also became one of the few to receive a hug from an Olympic gold medalist. Skier Lindsey Vonn, who previously dated golfer Tiger Woods, was present to give the new British Open champion a hug. Vonn posed with another young lady sandwich-hugging Spieth Sunday night just after he stepped in the pages of golfing history, according to an article in Metro Sports today.
Vonn, who has collected medals at the Winter Olympics as often as snow falls in the Alps, posted the picture of herself and another young lady hugging the golden boy of golf. She also tweeted, "Congrats CHAMP!"
Vonn recently repudiated rumors she was dating Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Previously, Vonn was reportedly dating Kenan Smith, an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Rams before he was fired this past spring along with the entire Jeff Fisher staff.
Jordan Spieth Ties Jack Nicklaus For Record
With his riveting victory at the British Open Sunday against rival Matt Kuchar, Spieth tied legend Jack Nicklaus with the record for most grand slam wins before turning age twenty four. The Dallas native, who reportedly has dated high school sweetheart Annie Verrett for years, previously dropped out of the University of Texas to win the 2015 Masters as well as the 2015 U.S. Open. Those two wins when combined with Sunday's dramatic comeback against Kuchar, elevated him into the exclusive club with Nicklaus.
Where Was Annie Verret Sunday?
While the picture of Vonn and Spieth exploded across social media the past two days, there were no published photographs of longtime girlfriend Annie Verret. Verret and Spieth have dated since their high school days in Dallas. Although they went to different colleges together......Spieth led the Univeristy of Texas golf team to a national championship while Annie compiled a perfect 4.0 GPA at Texas Tech...they continued their relationship.
Annie and Jordan have been pictured at several golf tournaments in the past with her offering him a congratulatory kiss. In fact she was there for his memorable Masters win to provide moral support for her longtime beau.
Jordan's mother has been quoted as saying he doesn't need a "celebrity girlfriend. Annie is good for Jordan." Annie has shunned publicity and Spieth has seemed content to keep her away from prying cameras throughout their relationship.
Jordan KIsses Annie After Another Win
Spieth's goals following British Triumph
On the heels of his dramatic British Open win, Spieth said he'd like to enter the Hall of Fame someday as well as win the PGA Championship in three weeks. By winning that tournament, he would enter a pantheon of very few golfers who have ever won the so-called grand slam of golf which includes the U.S. Open, British Open, Masters and PGA.
Dramatic Comeback Carried By CBS And Golf Channel
Spieth's dramatic comeback win against Kuchar was carried live by CBS Sports and re-played by the Golf Channel. Spieth entered the final round Sunday with a three-stroke lead in the British Open. He frittered that lead away though with some bogeys and an errant drive which landed 100 yards off the fairway atop a knoll overlooking a green. He was allowed a drop somewhere in a different zip code from which he recovered with a clutch shot over several obstacles and recorded a bogey which dropped him a stroke behind the 39-year old Kuchar.
Kuchar, for his part, played steady golf, surging past the 23-year old Texan with a barrage of pars and an occasional birdie. Following his inaccurate shot from the tee, Spieth gathered his composure and finish strong with an eagle and several birdies to save the day by three strokes.
Spieth Gives Classy Acceptance Speech
When Spieth accepted the claret jug as the Champion Golfer of the Year, he showed true class in his speech by thanking his main rival Kuchar, according to The Loop Newsletter. The new star of the golfing universe said, "Matt I really enjoyed battling with you buddy. Obviously it could have went to either one of us, I got the good breaks today. What a great champion Matt Kuchar is, and what a class act. I took about 20 minutes to play one of my shots today, and Matt took it in stride, smiled and...there's not many people who would have done that. And it speaks to the man you are, and you set a great example for all of us."
Jordan Spieth And Caddy Michael Greller Disagreed
Jordan Spieth played riveting golf the final five holes Sunday to win the British Open, but caddy Michael Greller may have made the pivotal decision to make it happen, according to Business Insider. At No. 13, Spieth clobbered his tee shot about 100 yards to the right of the fairway. After a nearly 15-minute delay, he declared an unplayable lie and took a drop farther back on the practice range.
While Spieth had a "cleaner lie" from where he dropped his ball, his eventual shot to the green "was blind." Spieth thought he was 270 yards from the green and wanted to hit a 3-wood. He wisely allowed his caddy Greller to correct him. Greller told him he was only 230 yards from the green.
"Michael told me, 'No 3-wood-hit 3-iron,"' Spieth said.
Thanks to Greller's yardage calculation, the ball ended up in a playable spot, not far from the right of the green. He Spieth not followed Greller's adivce he likely would've hit the grandstand.
Greatest Championship Charge Ever?
Spieth's final charge over the final holes of birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie is a finish that might be the champion's greatest major championship moment yet, according to SB Nation. Legendary golfer and commentator Johnny Miller called it the "the greatest finish he'd ever seen."
Lindsey Vonn Sent Spieth A message After British Open
Lindsey Vonn Champion In Own Right
Lindsey Vonn, who is an Under Armour client along with Spieth, is a champion in her own right. She is one of the most decorated skiing champs of all time. She has won four World Cup overall championships...one of only two female skiers to do so, along with Annemarie Moser-Proll...with three consecutive title in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and yet another in 2012. She also won the gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics, according to Wikipedia.
Jordan Spieth Family Celebrate British Win
Jordan Spieth's family weren't in Southport when their champion won his latest title, but they celebrated when he returned to Dallas. It was 5 a.m. when Spieth arrived in Dallas, but the time didn't matter as the family celebrated with champagne, according to For The Win.
Golf Not Top Priority In Spieth's Life
Although he is clearly at the peak of the golfing world, Spieth has said "My faith and then my family, and then after that, you know, this is what I love to do."
He reiterated that philosophy during a British Open post-tournament press conference. He further said, "But, yeah, to answer your question, absolutely. Golf is not No. 1 in my life. And I'll have a family of my own some day and that will be...golf will be fourth. So as of now, you know my relationships I have with my best friends and my family and my girlfriend are second and golf's third."
Dallas Party Continues For Spieth Family
Spieth's mother Christine posted Monday on Instagram, "Welcome Home..Champion Golfer of the Year!" according to the New York Post. Annie Verrett was present at the celebration in Dallas. She was also present at Royal Birkdale for that even earlier celebration, according to the Post article.
