At 177 centimeters tall and weighing 105 kilograms, Asian bodybuilder Lee Seungcheol (이승철) is one of most massive bodybuilders in South Korea. (That’s 5’10” and about 230 pounds in the U.S. system.) Not to be confused with the popular singer of the same name, bodybuilder Lee’s name is typically written in Korean as 이승철 선수, or Athlete/Player Lee Seungcheol. Though a competitive bodybuilder since 1999, Lee’s career reached new heights in 2010 when he won the title of Mr. Korea, Korea’s most coveted national bodybuilding prize.

Personal Life and Background in Bodybuilding

Lee Seungcheol was born on October 6, 1978 in Incheon, Korea’s third largest city just outside Seoul. He attended Incheon High School from 1994-1997 and attended JEI College (재능대학) in Incheon from 1998-2001, where he studied physical education.

According to Lee, he was a skinny 65 kilograms before he started bodybuilding. Though it’s unclear when Lee first began weight training, he won his first national bodybuilding competitions in 1999 while still a college student. In that year, Lee weighed less than 90 kilograms and won third place in his weight class at the Spring Bodybuilding Championship and first place in his weight class at the Mr. YMCA competition, two of Korea’s most prestigious bodybuilding contests. In the 2000s, he continued to participate in Korea’s top national competitions as well as his home city of Incheon’s annual bodybuilding contest. In 2008, Lee won first place in the heaviest weight class (over 90kg) at the Mr. Korea contest, but he lost the overall title to Kim Deok Soo (김덕수), winner of the 85-90 kg weight class.

Finally, Lee Seungcheol won the overall title of Mr. Korea in 2010. In the same year, he represented South Korea at the Asia Men’s Bodybuilding Championship and won third place in his weight category (over 100 kg). Wrapping up a year of great achievements, Lee got married on November 19, 2010.

In 2012, Lee opened his own health club in Incheon, and he continues to compete nationally.
