Martin Odegaard Overview

Martin Odegaard is one of the success stories for Real Madrid during 2018/19 season. His loan move to Vitesse has been an immense success to a point where he is named one of the players in Eredivisie Team of the Season.

Technically, Odegaard is very strong at the dribbling department, taking set pieces, passing, and making spaces across the pitch. He is a joy to watch whenever he has the ball.

His combined pace, technique and agility give him an advantage over defenders as they struggled to keep up with his movement. If they can somehow shackle him, his can resort to his passing skill. Note that his passes are imaginative and accurate.

He is a natural attacking midfielder, but Odegaard is at his best on the right wing. This is important factor for Real Madrid to consider for the future because Los Blancos have way to many left wingers right now.

How does he fare last season?

Martin Odegaard has performed wonderfully in 2018/19 season. His performances have displayed a maturity not seen previously. Most importantly, he has shown admirable consistency to play at the highest level week in and week out.

2018/2019 season is a godsend to Odegaard. He is the best player in Vitesse having played almost 3000 minutes in the Eredivisie. In those minutes, he has contributed 9 goals and 12 assists towards the club.

His numbers might seem not that impressive but the way he plays, his confidence, teamwork, and technical abilities stands him out from the rest. His exceptional season earned him a score of 7.8 in WhoScored.com database. To provide an additional perspective, Frenkie de Jong's score is at 7.54 for the season.

Vitesse finished fifth and are into the Europa League play-offs while Odegaard enjoyed his best ever season. He lead the way with 12 assists, involved in the most goals for the Eredivisie side, created the most chances and completed the most dribbles for Vitesse. .

Where does his future lies?

Real Sociedad president has publicly confirmed that they had held talks to potentially sign Odegaard even though that there’s no agreement at this point of writing.

Additionally, he also has the chance to step up another level at Bayer Leverkusen. This is an interesting prospect because Peter Bosz - the former Ajax head coach has an extensive record for polishing young players and turning them into a global powerhouse. Not only that, he has also shown a willingness to give them significant minutes as evident with Kai Havertz last season.

Both Sociedad & Leverkusen are a good choice for Odegaard to take his game to another level. On one side, he can familiarize himself at the La Liga further assimilating him into his eventual goal of playing for Los Blancos.

At the other side, joining Leverkusen will provide Odegaard an opportunity to play in the Champions League and prove himself against the best players in Europe. This can also ascends his position to eventually play at Real Madrid.

In my opinion, Odegaard should take the deal that can get the most playing time for him. Both of these clubs are good clubs but nothing matters if he only plays part time there.

With that being said, I want to also highlight that Peter Bosz will offer continuity for Odegaard to play the way he did at Vitesse, dribbling past opponents and finding space to play the killer pass to team-mates. I don't know much about Sociedad to comment if they would do the same.

Lets look deeper into the two clubs below to see which one fits Odegaard the most.

La Liga: Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad placed 9th in the 2018/2019 season.

Their style of play relies heavily on passing especially the short pass and thorough ball. They also relies on their midfield to go wide rather than starting with wide players staying wide.

They also have quite a lot of young players in the ranks. Therefore, age should not be a deterrent for Odegaard to work his way into this team.

It seems that Odegaard can adapt to this team quite easily. However, I have concerns with the position that Odegaard is competing with. In those wide-ish positions, he is competing with the likes of Adnan Januzaj & Mikel Oyarzabal whose played quite well last season. They are very young players too.

With that being said, I personally have confidence that Odegaard is a better player than the both of them. He just need to bide his time at the earlier stage of next season and play well whenever he is given chance.

Bundesliga: Bayer Leverkusen

Real Sociedad placed 4th in the 2018/2019 season.

Their style of play relies heavily on attacking down the wings especially the right side. They are also strong in the counter attacks, shot passing, and overall good retaining possession.

Playing with the same 4-3-3 formation is good as Odegaard is familiar with it. Leverkusen has a mix of young and mature players in their ranks.

Odegaard will fit right in this team as his skill sets are compatible with their style of play. However, Odegaard's position is occupied with two great players namely Kai Havertz and Leon Bailey.

Kai Havertz is one of the best young and emerging players in Bundesliga. Important to note that he is also playing at the right side of the wing - where Odegaard usually plays.

Odegaard might take some time to break into this team. Furthermore, he also might need to play primarily as a substitute for quite some time due to the nature of Leverkusen playing with a consistent first eleven last season.

Where do you think Martin Odegaard style fits most?
