Mary Keitany Prepares to Race the 2014 New York City Marathon

Updated on October 22, 2014

The 2014 running of the New York City Marathon welcomes Mary Keitany back to the marathon. She's the fastest women's marathoner not named Paula Radcliffe. Keitany, unlike Radcliffe, still believes her best competitive years are ahead of her. The 2014 New York City Marathon will be Keitany's return to the distance after taking 2013 off to give birth. Runners should not expect her to threaten the world record on the difficult New York course, but can look forward to seeing one of the best return to competition.

The 26.2 mile distance humbles many runners, but Keitany is one of few women in recent years to attack the distance. Her previous New York City appearances have included aggressive pacing. She has held on better in other marathons, such as in London, where the flatter courses are more conducive to record attempts. Her knowledge of the New York City course should help this 32 year old veteran of the sport run a wise race. Tune into the New York City Marathon on Sunday, 2 November. Look for her to run with the pack before deciding whether to make a strong move based on her returning fitness in the later stages of the race.
