Mourinho to Manchester United: A step in the right direction

Mourinho to Manchester United: A Positive Step Ahead

The ears of many United faithful rang as Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement at the end of the 2012/2013 Epl season. This was the news all Man. United fans feared. Many had argued and believed Sir Alex would dedicate his entire life to managing the club but no, he also had a family and a sacrificial wife who now needed him after the passing away of her sister.

On Ferguson's departure, he had suggested David Moyes, a fellow Scotsman as the man fit for the job. This was made, on the consideration that David Moyes was still a pretty young manager(50 years) as Ferguson believed David, being young could spend many years as he(Ferguson) had done. Now, this was where Man. Utd's problems arose. The fact that Sir Alex believed in the long term relationship between coaches and clubs is what kick-started the failure of Man Utd of the last three seasons.

What everyone ought to realise now is that the game of football has evolved both on and off the pitch. Nowadays, managers do not have the grace of staying for long periods at clubs if they do not perform up to expectations (well, except for Arsenal :) , who have been on a binge of trophyless seasons with Arsene Wenger who has failed to win the premiership title since 2004).

Top clubs in Europe do not give such grace. For instance,

I) Real Madrid, in recent years have had:

  • Pellegrini(2009-2010)
  • Mourinho(2010-2013)
  • Ancelloti,(2013-2015)
  • Benitez(2015-2016)who was sacked mid season and now
  • Zidane(2016- present)

    II) Barcelona who have had

  • Pep Guardiola(2008-2012)
  • Tito Vilanova(late)(2012-2013)
  • Gerardo Martino(2013-2014)and now
  • Luis Enrique(2014-present)

III) Bayern also who have had

  • Jupp Heynckes(2011-2013)
  • Pep Guardiola(2013-2016)
  • Carlo Ancelloti(2016 to present)

From these, we can see only the best candidates deserve the best jobs. and to preserve the status and name of the club, the best need to be brought in. Man Utd have taken a huge step in the right direction by doing away with Louis Van Gaal who did not perform up to expectations after taking over from David Moyes. Mourinho also needs to know that he is not assured a permanent seat and has to deliver results to stay at Manchester United.
