NFL Week 13 Recap--My Predictions

Updated on December 14, 2015

Randal Bruce vs ESPN

Randal finished Week 13 at 5-11. After back to back weeks of 11 or more wins, I take a major beating in Week 13. Nothing more to say. I took it on the chin this week. The leaders at ESPN this week are Eric Allen and Keyshawn Johnson at 12-4. They killed it. That's shocking for Allen. I think it's the first time he's won the week at ESPN this year. I got beat by everyone there. Wickersham was the worst at 6-10 and that beats me by 1 game. Ouch. Overall, I'm 103-89. That's still pretty good in my book. The ESPN overall leader is still Chris Mortensen at 122-70. I had a strong late push, but fell back to earth like the Detriot Lions. I can't be too angry. I'm trailing Eric Allen. He is in last place at ESPN. He's 106-86. He's got me by 3 games after his big Week 13. Sigh.

You can see my picks below. There is a link that will lead you to my division by division breakdown and picks and the next link will lead you to ESPN's.

Randal's Picks

My picks are in bold on the away and home columns.

The Packers stun the Lions with a Hail Mary TD with no time on the clock

All you have to say is Fail Mary. This game sums up the Lions season best. So much potential before this season started only to be disappointed. The Lions were cruising early with a 20-0 lead and let it slip away. It looks like they had the game won in the final seconds. All they had to do is bat down a Hail Mary pass. Game over and the Lions are in the playoff hunt. After this weekend in their division they would have had a slim chance to make a push to win it. BUT, and it's a big but, they didn't have Calvin Johnson on the field, they let the Packers receivers get behind them and Richard Rogers caught the miracle Aaron Rodgers pass. The Pack wins and get a dazzling come from behind win capped off with a spectacular play in the finish. The Lions season is flushed and their fans will spend the rest of the year thinking, What If?

Final Score: Packers 27-Lions 23

I picked the Lions before the season because I thought they would be tough to beat at home.

Bills get a big win over the streaking Texans

The Bills get a crucial win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Tyrod Taylor has given this team hope at the QB spot for the short term. He seems to play well at home. He had 3 TD passes and ran one in as well. This team is infinitely better when LeSean McCoy plays. He had 112 yards rushing in the win. It was a tough loss for the Texans because it hurt their division chances at the time and their wild card hopes. They are still alive in their division because of the Colts loss.

Final Score: Bills 30-Texans 21

I picked the Texans before the season because I thought they had a better coaching staff.

Blaine Gabbert and Torrey Smith hook up for a 71 yard TD as the 49ers stun the Bears in Chicago

So many blown opportunities for the Bears. Their reliable kicker Robbie Gould lines up for the game winning field goal. Only to blow the kick badly. It was only 36 yards. That's a routine kick. Say what you will about pressure, but they are expected to make those. Especially a well respected veteran like that with so much on the line. It was his 2nd miss in the game. Then the game goes to OT and they let Blaine Gabbert hit Torrey Smith with a 71 yard bomb to win the game. All they had to do was make that kick. This loss may have cost them their playoff chance and a shot at this division. It was an outside shot, but all you need is a shot. It was a nice feel good win for the 49ers. It's been a long season and maybe they've at least found a QB in Blaine Gabbert to bridge the gap until they draft another one.

Final Score: 49ers 26-Bears 20

I picked the Bears because I thought they would be tough to beat at home.

The Bengals cruise for an easy win over the sinking Browns

I don't even think the Bengals broke a sweat in this game. The win easily over a terrible Browns team. They are terrible from top to bottom. I don't even know how they have fans at this point. They have great fans and they are loyal and the Browns as an organization treat the people of Cleveland like crap. They have a shameful product and it won't be saved until someone who is football savvy buys the team. There isn't much to say about the game. The Bengals are a major contender in the AFC and the Browns have been looking for answers since they returned in 99.

Final Score: Bengals 37-Browns 3

I thought before the season the Browns would win because these teams usually split the series by winning at home.

The Titans streak ends at 11 by beating the Jaguars

2 young QB's duke it out against 2 really bad defenses. Marcus Mariota came out the victor. Mariota was efficent going 20-29 yards and 3 TD's for the Titans. He also rushed for 112 yards with 87 of those coming on a thrilling TD run. Dorial Green-Beckham chipped in with 5 catches for 119 yards and a TD. Blake Bortles wasn't going to be out done. Bortles passed for 322 yards and 5 TD's. Bortles hooked up with WR Allen Robinson 10 times for 153 yards and 3 TD's. It was a much needed win for the psyche of the Titans. They had lost 11 straight up to this point. It was a devastating loss for the Jaguars. They had a chance to gain ground in this division race. They still have an outside chance, but they can't afford to lose games that they should win like this one.

Final Score: Titans 42-Jaguars 39

I picked the Titans because I thought this game would be a toss up and the Titans were at home.

Cardinals get their revenge and bury the Rams in St. Louis

The Cardinals are becoming a serious contender for the Super Bowl. They'll be tough to beat as long as Carson Palmer is healthy. He is the key. They are good without him and we saw that last year, but the sky is the limit when he's healthy. He was big in this payback game for the Cardinals. He passed for 356 yards and 2 TD's. He has a very underrated group of WR's. Larry Fitzgerald gets overlooked because he isn't vocal. He had 8 catches in the game and became the youngest player to reach 1000 catches for his career. John Brown and Michael Floyd both went over 100 yards receiving. Carson's spreading it around because he's got great options. The Cardinals defense shut down the Rams pathetic offense and held them to 212 yards. I know the media loves Jeff Fisher but it's time to admit he failed folks. He's had more than enough time in St. Louis to right the ship. No more excuses.

Final Score: Cardinals 27-Rams 3

I picked the Cardinals because I thought they had a better coaching staff by a long shot.

The Dolphins beat the Ravens at home in Miami

The Dolphins fired their offensive coordinator and their offense got worse. I didn't think that was possible. They only gained 219 yards of total offense. Lamar Miller rushed for 113 of those on the ground. QB Ryan Tannehill only passed for 86 yards while only completing 9 passes. Yikes! Good thing the Dolphins won. They are running out of coaches to fire. The Ravens are beaten and bruised and looking forward to ending this miserable season. There wasn't much good in this game.

Final Score: Dolphins 15-Ravens 13

I picked the Ravens before the season because I thought they had more talent. They did and then they all got hurt.

The Seahawks knocked the Vikings back to earth with a severe beating

The Seahawks are streaking at the right time. They are starting to look like the team everyone thought they were before the season. Russell Wilson looks in tune in the offense. He passed for 3 TD's and ran for 1. Thomas Rawls continues to fill in for Marshawn Lynch. Rawls ran for 101 yards and a TD. The Seahawks defense bounced back by holding the Vikings to only 125 yards of offense. I don't understand how you can only give Adrian Peterson the ball 8 times. Sometimes coaches out coach themselves. A.P. publicly said they got out coached and he's right. I know he'll get some heat for saying it publicly, but it needed to be said. Now they are tied with the Packers for the NFC North lead.

Final Score: Seahawks 38-Vikings 7

I picked the Seahawks because they have one of the better rosters in the league.

The Jets win the battle for New York by downing the Giants in OT

What a job by Todd Bowles in his 1st year as Jets coach. They are going to be in this playoff race until the end. You have to like what you are seeing and they have a bright future with Bowles at the helm. Ryan Fitzpatrick balled out and outplayed Eli Manning in the battle of New York. Fitzpatrick passed for 390 yards and 2 TD's and most importantly no turnovers. It helps having two solid WR's in Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. Marshall had 12 catches for 131 yards and his TD sent the game in OT with 30 or so seconds left. Decker had 8 catches for 101 yards. They were running circles around Giant defenders. The Giants continue to disappoint, but depending how the Monday night Cowboys and Redskins game unfolds they could be tied for 1st or 1 game out in the NFC East at 5-7. Wow.

Final Score: Jets 23-Giants 20

I picked the Giants because they had owned the Jets in this series before this week.

The Bucs get a cruical win over struggling Falcons

The Falcons backslide continues. They had a players only meeting this week. So that's not good. Everyone fell in love with this coaching staff when the Falcons were 5-0. Now they are 6-6 and there are issues with Kyle Shanahan. Shocking, but not really because this is his 3rd team in 3 years. Somehow he keeps getting hired and QB's in his system continue to struggle. Everyone keeps asking what happened to Matt Ryan? They hired Kyle Shanahan that's what happened. Now you have your top WR Julio Jones saying publicly he doesn't understand what they are trying to do in the red zone with the play calling. Look for an early divorce there. Dan Quinn will live another day, but soon you'll see to that he's getting exposed as well. The Bucs, however are playing extremely well with their rookie QB James Winston. They are 6-6 and in the Wild Card hunt. This team will be scary in a few years because Jameis is still figuring things out and getting better every game.

Final Score: Buccaneers 23-Falcons 19

I picked the Buccaneers because I felt like the Falcons wouldn't win many road games down the stretch.

The Chiefs win their 6th in a row by taking down the Raiders

The Chiefs have rebounded in a major way. It looked like their season was over early. They have won 6 in a row. They are hot at the best time. They are finding new ways to pull out wins. They scored 20 in the 4th quarter to rally and win on the road. I don't think they have the firepower on offense to win playoff games, but it would be fun to see what happens. This was a tough loss for the Raiders. I still think in a few years they will be a team to watch. They just have to learn from this. It's just hard for their fans they are starved for winning football and the Raiders seem so close this year. I think they are ahead of schedule in Jack Del Rio's 1st year as coach.

Final Score: Chiefs 34-Raiders 20

I picked the Raiders because they shocked the Chiefs at home last year and I thought they could do it again.

The Broncos beat the Chargers in a defensive struggle

It's not pretty, but Brock Osweiler is 3-0. It's going to be hard for Peyton Manning to get back in the line up. They are going to have to be destroyed and humiliated in these last few games. They just keep finding ways to win. It's just like when Manning was in the lineup. The Chargers have quit on this season and it's sad. I thought they would make the leap this year, but they love their underachieving status.

Final Score: Broncos 17-Chargers 3

I picked the Chargers before the season because I thought they would be tough at home. I was so wrong on the Chargers and annoyed I thought this year would be different.

The Eagles stun the Patriots in Foxboro

The Patriots took the Eagles for granted and paid for it. Now their grip on home field advantage has slipped away in the AFC. There is no way they should lose to this team. The Eagles got a major win that may have saved their season. They have staked their claim for this awful NFC East division. Depending on how the Redskins, Cowboys game goes on Monday Night, they could be in a 3 way tie for 1st place. Amazing.

Final Score: Eagles 35-Patriots 28

I picked the Patriots because they have Tom Brady and the Eagles don't. The Eagles proved for one game they didn't need him.

The Panthers stay undefeated by taking down the Saints in New Orleans

The Panthers beat teams in so many ways. They just seem to be getting stronger as the season goes on. Usually teams get tighter the longer they are undefeated. The Panthers were down 14-0 early, but there was no panic in their game. Cam Newton was standing tall in the pocket all game and delivered strikes. He passed for 331 yards and 5 TD's. He also showed his versatility by scrambling for 49 yards. He is playing at an MVP level. He is making his critics eat their words. The Panthers are 12-0 and hungry for more. The Saints are 4-8 and it looks like the end of Sean Payton and maybe Drew Brees in New Orleans. They had a good run.

Final Score: Panthers 41-Saints 38

I picked the Saints before the season because I thought they would defend their home turf.

The Steelers destroy the Colts in prime time

The Steelers bounced back in a major way after losing a tough game in Seattle last week. Their defense showed up and held the Colts to 240 yards. Big Ben was brilliant passing for 364 yards and 4 TD's. DeAngelo Williams provided the ground attack with 134 yards rushing. Antonio Brown killed the Colts in the air hauling in 8 catches for 118 yards and 2 TD's. The Colts miss out on a chance to grab sole possession of the AFC South. They just couldn't keep up with the Steelers fire power.

Final Score: Steelers 45-Colts 10

I picked the Steelers because they were at home and I thought they had a better team than the Colts with or without Andrew Luck.

The Cowboys shock the Redskins late with a 54 yard game winning field goal

The Redskins blew a major opportunity because their head coach is a doofus. For some reason he doesn't know how to design/call plays for DeSean Jackson until the team is losing. The Redskins defense forced 3 turnovers and only had 3 points to show for it. The Redskins offense is predictable and ineffective. The Cowboys gutted out a major win with their season on the line and got a late Dan Bailey field goal to keep them in the hunt for this awful division. The Redskins fall into a 3 way tie with the Giants and Eagles at 5-7. The Cowboys are only behind by 1 game. Only in America folks.

Final Score: Cowboys 19-Redskins 16

I picked the Redskins because they were at home.
