NFL Week 5 Recap--My Predictions

Updated on October 20, 2015

Randal's Picks

My picks are in bold on the away and home columns.

Randal Bruce vs ESPN

I didn't have the best week in Week 5. I ended up 6-8. That's not great but so far not the worst week I had. There were so many upsets that no one saw coming. I hope to bounce back next week. ESPN had 3 guys go 11-3 (they saw the upsets coming)their worst personality tied with me. So I got whipped this week by the experts. Tom Jackson is leading at ESPN 52-25. His lead has grown to 7. My overall record is 45-32. That's still pretty good, but not where I want to be. You can see my picks below. There is a link that will lead you to my division by division breakdown and picks and the next link will lead you to ESPN's.

The Colts don't need Luck to beat the Texans

Since Andrew Luck arrived in Indy, the Colts don't lose AFC South games. It's that simple. It doesn't even matter if he is in the lineup, they still win. Luck has missed the last two division games and they went 2-0. Matt Hasselback has proven to be a great back up. The Colts do what good teams should do, beat their division. The Texans keep flip flopping on QB's and that's a major problem. Just pick one. The Texans went 9-7 last year without a viable QB. It was impressive, but it's not working in Year 2 under Bill O'Brien. They are a mess right now.

Final Score: Colts 27-Texans 20

I picked the Colts because since 2012, they don't lose AFC South games.

Falcons capitalize on huge mistake to beat the Redskins

I had a hunch that the Redskins would go into Atlanta and steal this game. For most of the game, it seemed like this upset pick would be true. The Redskins were in the middle of a game winning drive in OT and then Kirk Cousins did what he always does, turn the ball over. The Redskins defense played well and kept them in the game. The defense has kept them in every game, but their limitations on offense, especially at QB has kept this team down. This was a great game and Atlanta showed that they could win ugly. The Falcons are going to be a tough team to beat this year. I was critical of this coaching staff before the season and so far they have proven me wrong.

Final Score: Falcons 26-Redskins 19

I picked the Redskins because I thought the Falcons were overrated. I stand corrected.

Bengals score 20 unanswered to beat Seahawks in OT

The Bengals have a really good football team. They proved it on Sunday against the Seahawks. Now if they can only win these games in December and January. The Seahawks had the Bengals down 24-7 and the Bengals scored 20 unanswered points to win in OT. Andy Dalton showed a lot of heart leading his team back. The Seahawks offense will always be their downfall. They couldn't put this game away and left the defense on the field for a long time in the second half. I didn't get why people were so excited about the Seahawks trading for Jimmy Graham. He's a bad fit for this offense. The Seahawks defense is good enough to win Super Bowls but its offense is average at best. This game was about the Bengals. They took the fight to the Seahawks. Maybe this is their year. We'll have to wait and see.

Final Score: Bengals 27-Seahawks 24

I picked the Bengals because the last time they played they went into Seattle and won, so I assumed playing the Seahawks at home would be a piece of cake.

The Packers don't break a sweat beating the Rams

Easy pick here. The Packers are a far superior team. The Rams only play well against the NFC West. It's time for the Rams to realize Jeff Fisher isn't the guy to lead them to the next level. This team has talent, but poor leadership. The Packers keep on rolling and improve to 5-0.

Final Score: Packers 24-Rams 10

I picked the Packers because they are the better team on paper and they are pretty hard to beat at Lambeau field.

The Bills fight back to beat the Titans

I didn't believe Rex's schtick could work anymore and right now I will admit I was wrong. He's got this team believing in themselves and they are fighting each and every week. It's impressive because they don't have stellar QB play. I do love when I see coaches adjusting to the talent on their team and that's what they are doing with Tyrod Taylor. Taylor fought and lead the Bills back from a 10 point deficit. They have adjusted the offense to his strengths. It gives them the best chance to win and this defense is a mirror image of the coach. The Titans are being smart with Mariota. He's going through his struggles, but you can see that in a few years he could be a force to deal with.

Final Score: Bills 14-Titans 13

I picked the Bills because I thought that Rex Ryan would throw at lot at rookie QB Mariota. I didn't think he'd be prepared for Rex's defense.

Bears rally to beat Chiefs

The Chiefs are a huge disappointment. The Chiefs were up 17-3 to a Bears team that at times looks like it can't get out it's own way. Cutler may not be the guy for the Bears. He is the guy right now for them. They can't win without him. The Chiefs will have to move on from Alex Smith after the season. He can't throw the ball downfield. Take that into account and now they have lost their best weapon on offense in Jamal Charles. The Chiefs are on life support and need a win soon. The Bears have shown life with the return of Jay Cutler. Who would have thought?

Final Score: Bears 18-Chiefs 17

I picked the Chiefs because I thought they had better players and a better coach. I still feel that way but the Bears were better on Sunday and that's what counts.

Eagles destroy Saints

The Eagles offense finally came alive. Chip Kelly is safe for a week in Philly. They won't be trying to run him out of town for another week. I can't say the same for Sean Payton in New Orleans. The Saints are coming off a disappointing 2014 season. They have picked up where they left off last year. We may be seeing the end of Sean Payton and Drew Brees in New Orleans. They look real bad and have dug a major hole in a division were two of the teams have started the year undefeated. The Eagles have pulled themselves back into the race of a division that is terrible.

Final Score: Eagles 39-Saints 17

I picked the Saints because I thought their QB play would lift them past the Eagles bad defense.

The Buccaneers beat the Jaguars in a shoot out

I think the Jaguars should start thinking about who their next coach will be. I don't see this team improving. Gus Bradley is not the guy. This team is more appealing than it was before he got here so kudos there. I say that because of their QB Blake Bortles. He is the lone bright spot and may be enough to attract a good coach. He performed well in this game throwing for 303 yards and 4 TD's. I think the Buccaneers are heading in the right direction and have the right guy in Lovie Smith leading them. You can see Jameis Winston improving and in a few years they will be a tough team to beat.

Final Score: Buccaneers 38-Jaguars 31

I picked the Jaguars because I thought Bortles gave them the edge over a rookie in Winston. Bortles gave them a shot but Winston delivered the win.

Browns beat the Ravens in OT in Baltimore

What is wrong with the Ravens? They are solid in all phases. They just haven't been performing. Maybe the Browns aren't as bad as everyone thought. I don't know. They have an unstable QB situation, but they are continuing to fight. A few weeks ago, it looked like Manziel should be the starter. It's kind of hard to think that after the last two weeks Josh McCown was having. McCown threw for a team record of 457 yards and tossed 4 TD's in the win. He has this offense rolling. We'll have to wait and see if he can build on this momentum. This was a huge win for the Browns. They went into Baltimore and pulled out a win in OT. This could be one of those games that helps them turn the corner. Or maybe the Ravens are worse than anyone could have imagined.

Final Score: Browns 33-Ravens 30

I picked the Ravens because they normally own the Browns.

Cardinals make easy work of the Lions in Detroit

Carson Palmer is the key. If he is healthy for a full season the Cardinals could contend for the NFC Championship. That's if he can stay healthy. Palmer tossed in 3 TD's in the easy win over the Lions. The Cardinals bounced back nicely after an embarrassing loss to the Rams. The Lions are in panic mode. They are now 0-5. They benched Matt Stafford during the loss. That can't be good no matter what they are saying. I had this team pegged all wrong. I thought they would be 10-6 and make the playoffs as a wild card. I'm realizing now they may be drafting high in the 2016 draft. It doesn't look good in Detroit for anyone in this organization.

Final Score: Cardinals 42-Lions 17

I picked the Cardinals because I thought they had the better coaching staff. I was right by a wide margin on that.

The Patriots cruise to a victory over the Cowboys

Without Tony Romo and Dez Byrant the Cowboys are no match for the Patriots. Tom Brady was under siege in the first half, but shook it off to lead his team past the broken Cowboys. The Cowboys have the talent to right the ship even with the injuries. They just need more consistent play at the QB spot. I think it's time to switch to Matt Cassel and see what he can do. The Cowboys are lucky the NFC East is terrible.

Final Score: Patriots 30-Cowboys 6

I picked the Patriots because I thought even with Romo and Byrant the Cowboys weren't good enough to win.

The Broncos defense does it again and lifts them past the Raiders

The Broncos continue to win ugly and with defense. It has been impressive to watch. It's the way they will have to win with Peyton Manning's limitations. I think the running game will come around and the Broncos could be a force in the playoffs. I'm not ready to declare that but that defense has been slamming the door shut. The Raiders fought hard and they are improving every week. Their turnaround may be coming sooner than later. They came to fight but came up short.

Final Score: Broncos 16-Raiders 10

I picked the Raiders before the season because I thought they would win a big game they weren't suppose to. They almost pulled it off but almost isn't good enough.

Eli rallies the Giants late for a victory over the 49ers

The Giants have found their groove. They are on a hot streak and shouldn't be ignored. This is what they do. They are a streaky team. They are streaking in the right direction and may run away with this awful division. Eli showed he still has it by bringing his team back in the 4th quarter. Eli passed for 441 yards and 3 TD's. The 49ers are on a streak of their own. They have lost 4 straight and headed for a disastrous season. In other news Jim Harbaugh has the Michigan Wolverines on a streak too. They have won 5 in a row. Just a thought 49ers management. You had him and you blew it.

Final Score: Giants 30-49ers 27

I picked the 49ers because the Giants tend to lose games to teams they should beat.

Steelers beat the Chargers on the road

The Steelers gutted out a victory on the road in San Diego. The Chargers continue their tradition of underachieving. This should have been an easy home win over a weakened opponent. The Steelers were without Big Ben again and Vick was struggling for the first 3 quarters of the game. The Steelers kept fighting and found a way to win behind Le'Veon Bell's 111 yards rushing and some late MIke Vick heroics.

Final Score: Steelers 24-Chargers 20

I picked the Chargers to win because they were at home.
