Packing lightly for overnight trips in the wilderness
How to pack very lightly for your overnight trips.
Cutting down on backpack weight while out in the wilderness hiking and camping can help increase your overall joy and freedom to move with lesser weight on your back.
Now let's get straight to the point; This will depend on these key factors; fulfilling your basic human needs, food, water and protection, as well as tools to help you navigate while on your trip, and what else you would like to add on to increase your comfort while on the trip.
Food: Is the environment you are hiking and camping in abundant with edible food from plants and local wildlife? If so, you can consider not packing a lot of food. For example, if going on a 1 night trip, you could probably put in some mixed seeds and nuts, and preserved food, etc. The rest of your food can be acquired with fishing and picking edible fruits and plants while hiking. Just pack an extra fishing line, and knife, etc.
Water: Generally speaking, some places you hike at, will not require you to bring much water as you think. Unless you're planning to hike and camp in a dry desert and open dry grassland. You can easily acquire drinking water by extracting or collecting water from streams, rivers, lakes, rain, water from plants, and ground water with the right knowledge, then proceed to purify it. You may just pack in metal water bottle, along with fire starting tools to purify the water, and that's it.
Navigation: A compass and map is probably all you need.
Others: It will be wise to bring a long a small general first aid kit just in case!
Protection/shelter: This is one of my favorite part to consider and plan - This depends on factors such as the environment you'd be camping in. Think from the bottom way up. What would you need to protect you from the weather and elements? First think - On the move (poncho?), then what you need for a bed, then think about what you can bring along with you for added comfort.
Your backpack weight shouldn't add up to be a lot if you follow these guidelines.
