Manny Pacquiao’s popularity spreads like forest fire as he managed to crash into the elusive list of the “Top 10 Athletes Searched on Yahoo in 2001.”
The 33 years-old and southpaw Pacquiao placed third behind controversial golf superstar Tiger Woods at number 2 and the stunning car racing sensation and titlist Danica Patrick who plucked the number 1 spot.
Last November, Pacquiao eked out a majority decision victory over his old nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico and carries the lofty distinction as the only planet’s winner of 8 different world crowns in the same number of weight divisions.
Pacquiao’s triumph over Marquez is actually his second in as many outing and is marred by controversy. Many thought its Marquez that pulled through with a breakthrough win but looking closely at the statistics Pacquiao seemed to be the clear winner as he led Marquez in the number of boxing stats like converted power punches and jabs.
Earlier the Filipino ring hero fashioned out a one-sided 12-round unanimous decision over potential future Hall of Famer Sugar Shane Mosley to successfully defend his 147 lbs WBO title.
Tennis wonders Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams also made it into the elite Top 5 list, ranking fourth and fifth respectively. Sharapova was the most searched athlete in 2005 and 2008
Completing the list of Top 10 are New Jersey Nets forward Kris Humpries, the former spouse reality TV celebrity Kim Kardashian at sixth place, sneaking past United States women’s national team goalkeeper Hope Solo (7th), Los Angeles superstar Kobe Bryant (8th), Former Laker now a Maverick Lamar Odom (9th) and the current number women’s tennis player in the world Danish Caroline Woznicki.
