Preview of IPL 7

Updated on April 8, 2014

Players to look out for:

  • Faf Du Plessis
  • Suresh Raina
  • MS Dhoni
  • Ben Hilfenhaus

Chennai Super Kings

Traditionally a strong side in the IPL having won the IPL twice. They have had many star players in year gone by but still maintain the current Indian captain MS Dhoni who brings with him a wealth of experience and an excellent talent down the batting order.

Strengths:

They have many strengths in their side including a long list of all-rounders from which to choose including the likes of Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja. These players add an extra dimension to the team and extend their batting line up whilst also chipping in with a few vital overs. This make the Super Kings very dynamic and gives Dhoni many options from which to choose in a match situation. These extra bowling options and their extended batting line up will make these guys very hard to beat and they will again be contending for the title this year.

Weaknesses:

They really lack many top quality fast bowlers. Apart from Ben Hilfenhaus they are really missing out on someone who can bowl at the end of the innings. Nehra and Sharma could be costly towards the end of the innings and this could be their achilles heel in the tournament and they will not be able to rely solely on Bravo and Hilfenhaus to keep it tight at the end.

Players to look out for:

  • David Miller
  • Glen Maxwell
  • Mitchell Johnson
  • Cheteshwar Pujara

Kings XI Punjab

This is one of the teams to look out for, they have been poor in the past but now they have invested wisely in the auction and now they have one of the strongest squads in the tournament. Over the previous six seasons they have been a very average team and have only once qualified for the semi-finals and that way was back in IPL 1 in 2008 and since then they have never managed to get out of the group stage. This year could be different, they have many of the inform players and some big hitters so they could upset some of the other teams this year.

Strengths:

They have huge amounts of depth in their batting with some of the inform players from the World T20 including Glen Maxwell and George Bailey. They also have an excellent finisher with David Miller who could really propel their innings in to match winning totals. Also they have one of the best bowlers in the world at the moment with Mitchell Johnson who can come roaring in and will take early wickets up from to peg teams back. This will prove deadly as teams will not want to lose early wickets when chasing or setting targets.

Weaknesses:

Murali Kartik could prove to be a weak link as he is not a top quality spinner that they may need. They may need someone of a higher quality in the middle over to keep things tight. Another weakness would be that they only have one wicketkeeper in their squad and injury too him will mean that one of the batsman will have to done the gloves which could prove costly further on in the tournament. Virender Sehwag was a huge gamble as he has been in poor form in recent months and may not be a big hitting as he was in the past. Also Glen Maxwell is very much a hit and miss player so could be a gamble when chasing totals however when he comes off he can win a match for Punjab though how often he can do this in vital for their success.

Players to watch out for:

  • Chris Lynn
  • Sunil Narine
  • Piyush Chawla
  • Morne Morkel

Kolkata Knight Riders

One of the stronger teams in recent years having won the tournament in 2012 however they will want to come back from their dismal display in last year’s IPL where they finished 7th in the league made up of nine teams. They were bitterly disappointing last season and they will want to change all of that this year and prove they can win it again and that 2012’s triumph was not just a one off occurrence.

Strengths:

KKR have undoubtedly the best spinner in the tournament with Sunil Narine. He is a magician with the ball and can dry up the run rate and also take wickets at vital times. Pat Cummins is also a vital inclusion as he brings a bit of pace to the bowling line up. He can bowl upwards of 90mph which could prove vital as it can rattle even the best of batsman and in this league it is needed. Piyush Chawla could also be another spinner that proves vital to KKR. The legspin will compliment Narine’s offspin perfectly and will be hard to score off. Their 8 overs between them could be crucial and other teams will struggle to score too many runs in the middle period making things very hard on the spinning surface in Kolkata.

Weaknesses:

Pat Cummins has been injury prone in the past and could be a risk throughout the tournament with the amount of games and little rest between each one. Also being 20 years old he is still very inexperienced meaning that he could also be costly if he gets things wrong. The big hitters down the KKR line-up may not always fire including Yusuf Pathan. He has been a big disappointment in the previous two seasons for KKR. Is he worth having in their line-up if he is still failing this year?

Players to look out for:

  • Chris Gayle
  • Virat Kohli
  • AB de Villiers
  • Yuvraj Singh

Royal Challengers Bangalore

This is one of the best supported teams in the IPL. They have had many star players throughout the previous six years but they have always failed to win the title, something that is considered disappointing considering the quality of players that they have in their ranks.

Strengths:

With the likes of Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, and Virat Kohli in their batting order runs will not be an issue for RCB. They will be playing on a good batting surface at home in Bangalore so expect that to become the usual fortress that it has been for them in years gone by. Also with Yuvraj Singh and Albie Morkel coming in down the order could easily propel their totals into match winning ones.

Weaknesses:

A huge weakness of theirs is their ability to bowl well. They will simply be taking the attitude that they can chase down any total due to the low quality of their bowlers. Mitchell Star is one that could bleed runs if he is not on his game and that could be costly for RCB when it comes down to it and this could mean that they again go another year without an IPL title. Yuvraj also had a poor World T20 meaning that there is pressure on him to live up to his large price tag or be deemed a failure.

Players to look out for:

  • Kevin Pietersen
  • Ross Taylor
  • Quinton de Kock
  • Mohammed Shami

Delhi Daredevils

Another team that has been poor in the past but has had high expectations put-upon their shoulders. They have a large support and many people have expected better of them in years gone by. This year they have spent well in the auction so maybe this could be their year to final gain their first IPL title.

Strengths:

They have a string batting line-up with the likes of Kevin Pietersen at the top of the order. He will take part in the whole tournament which could be vital for the Delhi. Their top five is one of the strongest in the tournament with two of the best openers anywhere with Murali Vijay and Quinton de Kock opening the innings and getting their team off to a good start could be key to their chances in the tournament. They also have great depth in their fast bowling ranks which could be key towards the end of the tournament when they can chop and change players to keep them fresh.

Weaknesses:

They are light on a top quality spinner which could be key when they play on wickets such as those in Kolkata where a top spinner will be key for victory. Also they do not have many top quality allrounders which could be key if early wickets are lost in the games ahead. They cannot always rely on their high quality batting line-up because in one or two games they may lose early wickets which could then mean game over for them.

Players to look out for:

  • Shane Watson
  • Ajinkya Rahane
  • James Faulkner
  • Steve Smith

Rajasthan Royals

This team was the first team to win the IPL but since then they have not seen much success and they will be aiming for further success this year with the key inclusions to their line-up. They will also be expecting big tournaments from key players such as Shane Watson and Ajinkya Rahane who will be key for the Royals to succeed.

Strengths:

They bought the most players out of any of the eight teams at the auction and this helps them with their depth. This could prove vital in the latter stages of the tournament which could mean that players are kept fresh after a long tournament. This could be the difference for them over many of the other teams. Also with their quality in the allrounder department this could mean that they are a very versatile team with many options. Shane Watson and James Faulkner are key players who can hit the ball hard and bowl with pace at both ends of the innings. Also with Tim Southee they have one of the best death bowlers in the world who could be key for the at the end of the innings to restrict the opposition.

Weaknesses:

Many of their back up players have little experience in the IPL meaning that any injuries could mix up the main XI and plans will then need to be changed. Even with their growth they will still want to keep their key players fit rather than taking the risk with inexperienced players in a top quality tournament that the IPL is.

Players to look out for:

  • Corey Anderson
  • Kieron Pollard
  • Lasith Malinga
  • Mike Hussey

Mumbai Indians

One of the inform team over the last four editions of the IPL finishing of in the top four on every single occasion with a victory in last year’s editions as well. They are one of the biggest spenders in the auction and always want the best players and this is then shown with their success over the last four seasons of the IPL.

Strengths:

They have one of the biggest hitters in the world in the form of Corey Anderson who has the record for the fastet ODI century. Also they have Kieron Pollard who has an exceptionally high career batting strike rate (156.97 runs per 100 balls) means that they will be dangerous going into the last 5 overs of a game. Also with Mike Hussey and Rohit Sharma at the top of the order means that they will regularly have a strong platform from which to propel on from. Also with Lasith Malinga they have someone that can really dry the runs up at the end of an innings with his dealy yorkers which could spell disaster for opposition batting.

Weaknesses:

They lack a top quality keeper batsman after the loss of Dinesh Karthik, so that means that they will be weak behind the stumps of face weakening their batting line up. They are also short of high quality Indian batsman meaning that injuries could be an issue if one of their overseas batsman is lost to injury or fails to fire in the tournament.

Players to look out for:

  • David Warner
  • Darren Sammy
  • Amit Mishra
  • Dale Steyn

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The newest team in the IPL with this season being only their second in the tournament. This season could be one that come with success due to the high quality of players that they have in their ranks and they will be contesting for a top four finish this season.

Strengths:

An incredibly strong top order with power players such as David Warner and Aaron Finch. Also with the inclusion of Darren Sammy low down the order means that runs will not be an issue for this team. They Warner and Sammy are both in good form and will be ready to get going in this tournament and ready to hit the sixes. Also with Dale Steyn and Amit Mishra they have out and out wicket takers who will test even the best of batsman on the opposing teams.

Weaknesses:

Again this is another team that is light on Indian batman and they are also missing a top off spin to compliment Mishra’s bowling. Also with Shikhar Dhawan being in poor form in the ICC World T20 he could be a risk at the top of the order for the Sunrisers meaning that they could be vulnerable to getting off too poor starts until he finds some of the form her had last year.
