James Toney's Five Biggest Victories

These are my top picks but Toney has over 70 wins and many more quality victories other than just these five. On his best day To ey had a defense and counter punching skills that were top notch to say the least.

1. Toney K.O. 11 Michael Nunn for the Middleweight Crown. Toney was behind in the bout when he landed a miracle of a left hook that had Nunn out on his feet and Toney pounced to the fight was halted. This was dramatic considering it appeared that Toney was on his way to a decision loss. Nunn, using his southpaw jab and fast feet to win rounds but JT mounted the improbable comeback.

2. Toney K.O. 9 Iran Barkley to win the Super Middleweight Crown.Toney dominated The Blade before winning by technical knockout. Toney landed every punch in the book and cut his face up into hamburger meat. Barkley was too slow to even compete with this defensive specialist constantly launching and clearly missing hooks and lead rights. On the other hand,Toney landed counter and lead hooks, uppercuts and right hand leads at will.

3. Toney K.O. 9 Evander Holyfield in major Heavyweight Bout. Toney was a masterful defensive counter puncher and he completely embarrassed The Real Deal whom he battered to the head and body with huge hooks and uppercuts. What made this win so important was the fact that Toney was not a real heavyweight and extremely short for the weight class standing at only 5 feet 9 inches tall and yet he won every second of this bout against the former 4-time heavyweight champion.

4. Toney wins in 12 over Vassily Jirov for the Cruiserweight World Championship. A close encounter but Toney landed the harder shots down the stretch and scored a knockdown in the 12th. Jirov got hit with clean counter punches and hard jabs the entire match but he kept it close was his constant pressure and punch output.

5. Toney K.O. in 12 over Former Light Heavyweight Champion Prince Charles Williams in defense of his 168 pound crown. Toney slowly made Williams wilt by slipping Williams big shots. The bout took place in close quarters until Toney finally wore the Prince down. Toney landed hooks to the body and head while fighting in a phone booth with Charles Williams.

James "Lights Out" Toney

James Toney was born in Michigan and has won titles as a Middleweight against Michael Nunn, a Super Middleweight by stopping Iran Barkley and asa Cruiserweight by beating the unbeaten Vasily Jirov. Lights out had a defensive style very similar to that of Floyd Mayweather. His defensive and counter punching skills are two of his best qualities along with his chin and on his best day all three are second to none. Below is a look as his career record.

Amateur record: 31 Wins, 2 Losses and 29 wins coming by way of knockout.

Professional Boxing record: 74 Wins, 7 Losses, 3 Draws and 45 knockout victories on his resume.

Mixed Martial Arts Record: 2 Wins and 2 Losses: All 4 fights in MMA ended by knockout.

J.T. has also beaten several quality Heavyweight boxers including Evander Holyfield and Samuel Peter. He is a true bad boy of boxing and his attitude and mouth are almost as hard and loud as his fists. He has tangled with the best fighters of the last twenty years including: Roy Jones, Prince Charles Williams, Michael Nunn, Mike McCallum, Evander Holyfield, Iran Barkley and Tim Littles. His counter punching skills, defense, accuracy, timing and chin are amongst the best ever. Only his occasional bad training habits and over eating have affected him. But on the other hand when lights out was at his best and in his prime he was the total package and he often would make other boxers look foolish with his defensive skills and offensive prowess. Watching Toney start fights and talk trash before, during and after fights was usually pretty entertaining. When he could get into your head he just got an edge in the bout which is all part of the plan. Toney could adapt to any style in the ring and he brought whatever the situation called for. He was an excellent boxer puncher who could box rings around his opponent or knock you cold with a single blow and most importantly his defense and counter punching ability were second to none in his prime.
