Boxing Meets Comedy

This hub focuses on five boxers who have appeared on television sitcoms many of them appeared on several shows. The fighters are: George Foreman, Evander Holyfield, Marvin Hagler, Mike Tyson and Joe Frazier.

"Big" George Foreman on Television

George Foreman guest starred on episode 108 of Sanford and Son entitled "The Director". It was made in 1976 and put on the air in 1977. Foreman ends up punching the wall with anger at Fred Sanford and breaking his hand so he can't box.

George Foreman retired from boxing in 1977 and did not return to the ring until 1977. But after becoming the oldest heavyweight champion in boxing history at 45 years old in 1994 his popularity was at its zenith. He even had a short lived sitcom show about his family life on ABC.

George Foreman won the gold medal in the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games. He went on to win the heavyweight championship two different times with the second time making him the oldest heavyweight champion in history. Among his greatest victories were knockouts over Ken Norton and Joe Frazier (Twice).

* Besides television shows George has been in commercials and endorsed mufflers, chicken and most famously the George Foreman Grills. He has done commercials for Doritos and Ball Park Franks as well.

"The Real Deal" Evander Holyfield on T.V.

Evander Holyfield appeared as himself in the first season of Fresh Prince of Bel Air in the fifteenth episode which is entitled " Deck the Halls". He moved in next door to The Prince and he knew Hilary so he stopped by their home. This show aired in 1990.

Evander Holyfield also had a similar guest spot on The George Carlin Show. It was episode of seven of the first season. The show was entitled, " George Gets Some Money". The episode aired in 1994 shortly after Holyfield won the Heavyweight title for the second time.

Evander Holyfield won a Bronze medal in the 1984 Olympics. As a professional he won the Cruiserweight championship and then he became the only four time heavyweight champion of the world.

Holyfield has been on Dancing with the Stars and many talk shows. As far as advertising Holyfield has his own BBQ sauce and he has done commercials for Burger King, Coke and Budweiser. Also, Holyfield was in commercials for Taco Bell (2009), and Chili's (1990).

Marvelous Marvin Hagler on Comedy Shows

Marvin Hagler made a guest appearance on Punky Brewster in 1985. The episode is called The K.O. Kid and Hagler played as himself. Punky wanted to learn to defend herself so she seeks out Marvelous Marvin Hagler.

The Marvelous One was on an episode of 227 which aired in 1988. The show was called Hide The Star. Hagler played as himself in the comedy show.

Marvelous Marvin Hagler held the middleweight championship from 1980 until 1987 making 12 total defenses of the title. He was a great boxer- Puncher who had a steel chin and took on all comers. Among his greatest triumphs were victories over Roberto Duran and Thomas Hearns.

Aside from 227, Punky and boxing Hagler did commercials for Pizza Hut in 1987 and Right Guard Deodorant in 1988. Hagler also appeared in Wreslemania 14, on the Johnny Carson Show and lots of other television programs through the years.

Tyson and Television

"Iron" Mike Tyson Guest Starring on T.V. Sitcoms

In 1987 less than a year after he became the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history Tyson appeared in an episode of Webster. The skit was called" The K.O. Kid". It was season four of the sitcom and the nineteenth episode.

Mike Tyson also appeared on Who's The Boss (1989,1990), and How I Met Your Mother (2013).

Kid Dynamite won the heavyweight title in 1986 to become the youngest heavyweight king in history at age 20. Nearly ten years later he recaptured the glory of his youth for winning the championship a second time. His top wins in the ring came from knocking out Hall of Fame fighters Michael Spinks and Larry Holmes.

Tyson has been in movies and even had a show on Animal Planet called Taking on Tyson. He has also done commercials for Nintendo and Diet Pepsi. Tyson also did a Kodak film commercial in 1986 and of course he has been on WWE Wrestling for years off and on.

"Smokin" Joe Frazier on Funny Television Shows

Joe Frazier played himself in a 1985 episode of The Jeffersons that was called, " You'll Never Get Rich". Frazier and George Jefferson have a heart to heart about making it in a hard world.

Joe Frazier lent his voice to The Simpsons in 1992 and again in 2006. Frazier has also played as himself in WWF (Now WWE), David Letterman Show, Rocky(Movie), Dean Martin Comedy Hour, Johnny Carson and many other shows.

Smokin' Joe won a Gold Medal in the 1964 Olympics and the Heavyweight Championship as a professional. Frazier gave the great Muhammad Ali his first defeat to become the undisputed heavyweight champion. Frazier took on all comers during his outstanding prizefighting career.

Frazier has had endorsement deals and did commercials for Cigars (1971), Miller Beer (1977), and Ragu in 2004.
