Ready for Conference
Conference Play Just Ahead
With the Falcons first conference game quickly approaching the junior varsity softball team is showing signs of being ready. Caiti Mickles has thrown well in her past couple of outings, and the team is hitting the ball better. Tidy up a few things in the field and this team is solid.
On Saturday, the North Davidson Knights hosted the JV Falcons in a game immediately following the varsity. Jenna Moran got a rude introduction to the game as she was hit by a pitch to lead-off the first inning, and then stranded at second base.
In the second inning, Kelsey Swaim got the first of three consecutive hits for the Falcons. Lexie Wingler and Alexis Collins both followed with singles to score the first run for the Falcons.
The lead held until the bottom of the third inning. The Falcons made a couple of miscues in the field that gave the Knights some extra at-bats. The Knights took advantage of the opportunity and scored four runs to take the lead.
The Falcons got one back in the top of the fourth as Lexie Wingler got her second hit of the game, and came around on a single by Anna Doub.
With the score 2-4, the Falcons duplicated the miscues in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Knights another four runs and a commanding lead. At this point it would have been easy to pack it up for the day, but the girls decided to fight back for three runs of their own in the top of the fifth.
Kaylee Bullin and Davis Ann Wood lead-off with walks to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Kelsey Swaim and Lexie Wingler hit back-to-back doubles to cut the lead to three runs.
The Falcons corrected the defensive issues in the bottom of the fifth inning and held the Knights scoreless for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, the Falcons could not plate any runs in the final two innings, so the score remained 5-8 in favor of the Knights.
The Falcons come up short again, but seem to be gaining confidence at the plate. This could be the turning point for the Falcons as conference play starts on Tuesday against the Greyhounds of North Surry.
North Davidson boasts one of the driest fields in Western North Carolina. Diving back to first can leave a bad taste in your mouth and a craving for water. This goes for the fans sitting down the first baseline, also. Alexis Collins battled through it after reaching base on a single up the middle.

Jenna Moran plays the center field position for the junior varsity team. She is quick and crafty with the glove. Don't let her size deceive because she can pack a pretty good punch at the plate.
Rachel Doss began the game as the team's flex at second base. This year, Doss has platooned between the outfield and the infield. She is one of those valuable utility players that can be used in several situations.
