How I got "hooked".
In June of 2014 I got to experience one of the greatest things in the world. Camp Quality Northwest Missouri. I remember how everything fell into place that hot summer day in June and will never forget it. Step into my memory and relive this wonderful day with me.
For my readers/followers that do not know what Camp Quality is:
Camp Quality is a week long camp, usually in June, for NWMO for kids with cancer. It provides them the chance where they can come, meet great people who care about them, develop life-long relationships with other campers going through the same things.... and just be kids enjoying life as it should be! It provides a stress-free environment where they can make lifelong friends and participate in activities that allow them to just be kids!

I was laying in bed when my phone buzzed. A Facebook Messenger notification flashed across my screen. It was from an old teacher who used to teach at the high school that I graduated from. "Girls, I might need your help..." "but I think I want to play 'the dating game' as just a fun activity with the kids at camp quality.....and I need bachelorettes....." At this time I had heard of Camp Quality and knew what it was about but that was about it. "You'd come play the game and then go 'on a date' to the camp dance that night" ... "That's all there really is to it". Easy enough, so I said "yes!". We chatted more about what exactly we were doing and when we were meeting. I was SO excited! I didn't really know what to expect, but I would soon learn that my decision aided in wonderful memories and an life changing experience!
As June quickly arrived my nerves started to kick in! I didn't know what I was doing. I am one of those people that if I do not know what I am doing, or when I am doing it, I panic. I mean panic. But, it was soon the BIG day! Time to head off to Camp Quality! A few girlfriends of mine and a few guy friends (you need Bachelors if you have Bachelorettes) met in town to carpool to the camp grounds. We all packed into a van like sardines and shared our feelings with each other. I was definitely not alone as we talked more about how nervous we were. But, we all had one thought in common, "This is going to be so fun and so awesome!!". We arrived to camp about 20 minutes later. Everyone jumped out of the car and went to find Derek. Upon finding Derek he sent us to the place we were going to play "the game"! Wooohooo! We all sat on stage with a "wall" between us and the campers. The campers would ask a question and we would answer it. We then had to pick our favorite camper after asking them questions in return. Whoever we picked was our date!
Once I picked my date we got to introduce ourselves and then it was time for our date at the dance! My date was so shy, and if you know me, I am the absolute polar opposite. Uh-oh. ;) But, he did just fine and soon warmed up to the fact that I am a ball of crazy. We danced the night away with other kids watching and some even joining in to learn some of my wild dance moves. Jk, I can't dance. After the dance we all headed down the hill to lay out on a blanket and watch some fireworks by the lake. It was wonderful! Soon it was time to go. My friends and I said "see ya later" to our dates and we headed back to the van. The whole ride home was spent sharing stories about our dates and how they went. Many laughs were had and many memories that will always remain etched into our brains were shared.
I was hooked. I loved Camp Quality. I know I only spent half of a day there, but I feel in love. The staff was so wonderful and the kids were so fun to be around. I could probably spend forever there if I really wanted to. In January of 2015 I submitted my application to be a companion at Camp Quality Northwest Missouri. I was accepted and TONIGHT, I move into my cabin on one of the most greatest camp grounds in Missouri. I would be lying if I said that I was not nervous... because, I am. But, I am also ready to feel that same feeling in my stomach I had almost exactly a year ago. Thank you, Derek for the wonderful opportunity to volunteer last year, and thank you Camp Quality Northwest Missouri for giving me the chance to experience one of the BEST feelings in the world.
