Refs Embarrass Themselves on Monday Night Football
That was the reaction of many people watching the Monday Night Football game on ESPN between the Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots. Both teams had just about even records, had displayed moments of greatness within the game, had calls go both ways, and it looked like it would come down to the last play, until, the refs never allowed it.
What turned out to be the last play, was an egregious pass interference call in which Rob Gronkowski was mugged by defenders while trying to come back to the ball. The ball, that Gronkowski would have tried to come back to, was picked off by a Carolina defender, just as the refs flew a flag. It was clear to all, except the refs, that the refs were going to call a pass interference, or at the very least defensive holding, which was what most thought they were conferencing about, and allow the players to decide the game on the last play.
Suddenly, the refs picked up the flag to dismay of millions of viewers both live and via live feed and ended the game without explanation. They ran off of the field as New England quarterback, Tom Brady, heatedly chastised the refs as he walked into the locker room.
It was pathetic. To make it worse, they trotted out an official who gave a weak excuse. He did not vehemently back up their call and claim that it was a correct call. He instead, kept hiding behind the words "judgement call", which means that to another set of eyes there most likely would have been a different outcome.
One thing almost all football fans hate, even if it benefits them, is the game being decided by the referees and not the players.
Let the players play. They did not. It was pathetic!
