The Origin Of Skiing & As A Sport!

Skiing has been used for centuries in mountainous & snowy regions as transportation. Skis were developed in Scandinavian countries to travel in the snow. Original skis in history were not the same size. One ski was longer & greased with animal fat as a gliding ski, & the other ski was shorter with plain wood or covered with skin & used as a kicking ski. Today's sport skis are both longer gliding skis used for down hill or cross-country action.

There are two major types of skiing. Alpine skiing involves skis that are connected to the boot at the toe & the heel. Nordic skiing has the boot connected at the toe only to leave the heel free for lifting. We will examine both types!

Ski Jumping, Slalom Skiing, & Biathlon!

Ski jumping involves flying off of slope jumps to come to a safe landing. Notice that Ski Jumpers lean forward in flight to gain momentum before landing on the skis! Slopes range from smaller intermediate jumps to extremely high jumps requiring expert skill!

Slalom skiing involves turning around markers on a downhill run & requires professional maneuvering skills to navigate the course. Hitting markers wrong counts against the skier!

Biathlon skiing involves cross-country skiing & shooting skills as well. These skiers are trained for heavy endurance & marksmanship!

All these skiing events are scheduled in the Winter Olympics & for Professional Competitions! Skiing is a major Winter sports activity!

It's a major thrill to ski in the snowy weather & drinking hot toddy's at the Lodge after a long day on the runs! It is the ultimate in outdoor fun when the snow comes down! Watching skiers in action is well worth the time! So go out & get a pair of skis & take to the slopes!
