Sports Picker: Win Prizes with this Free Facebook and iOS App

Updated on August 28, 2012

Sports Picker is a free app on Facebook and the iOS that is designed for sports fans to pick winners of games and compete against their friends for bragging rights and even some prizes. Players can create their own custom challenges and invite their friends or compete in public pools for prizes like Amazon gift cards, copies of Madden 2012, Best Buy gift cards, and eBay gift cards. The best part about the app is that it is entirely free to play!

Similar to ESPN's Streak for the Cash, Sports Picker is a great free way for sports fans to pick winners of NFL, NCAA football, NCAA basketball, and MLB games and compete for prizes. There are several sponsored challenges running weekly that are open to anyone to compete in a free pick 'em style pool and win prizes. The pick 'em style of play is great and rewards players for picking upsets by offering higher point payouts for underdogs without needing to understand the complexity of point spreads.

The Rules

Each game that you can pick has a favorite and an underdog based on the point spread. If you pick the favorite and the favorite wins, you get 100 points. The underdog is valued at between 125 and 200 points if you pick an underdog correctly. This unique point system rewards players for taking risks and picking upsets (when they work out).

You are not penalized for getting a pick wrong, so if you choose the Yankees (Favorite 100 points) to beat the Red Sox (underdog 150 points) and the Red Sox win, you would not lose any points. If the Yankees won, 100 points would be added to your total.

The player with the most points at the end of the pool period wins. Simple as that!

Prizes

Sports Picker is NOT a sports betting application. The game is entirely free to play and prizes are given out to eligible players. My girlfriend got 2nd in an MLB challenge and won a $15 Amazon gift card. Within 24 hours, the owner of Sports Picker e-mailed her and asked for information like what state she lived in and her birthday to make sure that she was eligible for a prize. Players must be 18 or older to win prizes. She received her gift card electronically later that day!

There are several free to play sponsored pools each week on Sports Picker that give away great prizes!

Create Your Own Challenge

One of the great features of Sports Picker is the ability to create your own challenge and invite your friends. The process is simple and you can invite as many or as few people as you want. Sports Picker gives you freedom to set up your challenge the way that you want and does all of the tracking for you!

Below are screen shots of each step to set up a challenge. For this example, I'm setting up an NFL Week 1 pick 'em for my girlfriend and I. The loser buys dinner on our date night.

Step 1 is to name your pool and set which sport you will be picking and the duration of the challenge. You can also set the prize.

Step 3 is to make your picks! Sports Picker will do the rest for you. One thing to consider is that the favorite/underdog points will be changed when the spread is released for each game (usually a couple days before the games).

Your Challenges

On the main page of Sports Picker, you can track your challenges and see how you are doing in both the sponsored challenges and any custom challenges. Sports Picker is extremely easy to navigate and intuitive, which makes for an enjoyable pick 'em experience. I'm planning on setting up a weekly NFL pool for my friends using Sports Picker and am looking forward to competing for prizes in the sponsored pools for NFL and NCAA football this season!

Badges

Each time you make a pick in Sports Picker you earn experience points. These points translate into "levels" or badges. The more often you play (and the more picks you get right!), the higher your ranking in Sports Picker. You start off as a "Jungle Gym God" and progress through the stages of athletic superstardom until you finally reach the pinnacle - the "Team Owner." These badges add even more fun to the game and encourage players to join more challenges. And why not? Sports Picker gives players something to cheer for in every sporting event that they pick!
