The Olympic torch relay 2012

Updated on June 29, 2012

The Olympic torch relay 2012

In the UK we are in the middle of the Olympic torch relay which started back in May 2012 at Lands ends, in Cornwall. The journey from lands end took the torch northwards and then on to Wales and over to Ireland before ending up in Scotland. Once it had done the tour of Scotland the torch started it way back southwards towards London in time for the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games in July.

June 2012

June 28th 2012 saw the Olympic torch come to my town and I was lucky enough not to be in work on the day, so I could get to see it for myself. I’ve never seen the torch in person before and more than likely never will again, once in a life time thing I’m sure. To be honest I don’t think I seen so many people in my town that where out lining the route of the torch, even though an hour or so before it was due to past by me we had a all mighty thunder storm. The poor person, who was carrying the touch at the time, must have been soaked.

Seeing the touch was amazing, so many people a great sense of community spirit. Getting together to view something which many of use won’t see in our life time again. It was as if the Olympics had come to my town. Many won’t have gotten tickets to see any of the Olympics in person but seeing the touch on its way to London is properly the next best thing for many. I can see the talk of seeing the Olympic relay torch for many years to come.

The touch

The torch is three sided, one side for each time the UK as held the games, 1908, 1948 and 2012. The torch as 8,000 holes in it, one for each of the 8,000 torchbearers and one for each of the 8,000 miles it as to travel along the route of the relay towards London. The touch is 800mm tall and weighs 800 grams.

It was an amazing day, one which I will remember for some years to come, thank you for viewing, take care and have fun.

The torch went through Christchurch Saturday the 14th July, with many people lining the route, it was a lovely site to see so many happy faces.

Great photos. I missed the torch passing near where I live - got stuck in a traffic jam - due to the torch of course!

Nice photo's. It's been a great journey for the torch although I was slightly disappointed that runners aren't actually carrying it the whole length of the Uk and it's being transferred between points before it travels by foot. I'd have liked to have seen it travel by foot from Nottingham all the way up to Mansfield and beyond yesterday

Bring on the games. Can't wait now!
