The Respected Glamazon Known As Beth Phoenix
Brains, beauty, and brawn. There's not a woman that has ever been in the WWE that epitomizes those three words together more than Beth Phoenix.
When Beth first appeared in front of our very eyes, Mickie James was attempting to attack an injured Trish Stratus. Out of nowhere, a mystery blonde woman came to the aid of Trish to fend off the "psycho" women's champion. We were all shocked with awe as our eyebrows went downward and our minds became puzzled, wondering who this glamazon of a woman was standing in the ring.
Having your WWE debut in the midst of two of the most iconic women to ever step foot in the professional wrestling industry is something every aspiring superstar would certainly appreciate.
Although it was a special time for Beth, not even a month later she needed surgery to repair a broken jaw she suffered in a match against the powerful Victoria. During that match, you couldn't even tell that Beth was ailing from the broken jaw as she continued to battle inside the ring, showing the world how much heart and passion The Glamazon had for her work. She proved why she belonged in WWE, and why she would be a force to be reckoned with for many years to come.
The Glamazon Returns Even Stronger
After nearly a year of being out of action in WWE, Phoenix returned and looked even more determined than ever. She quickly emerged into the Women's title scene, where she started a rivalry with the champion, Candice Michelle.
At No Mercy in 2007, Beth Phoenix would capture her very first Women's championship, finally defeating a feisty and passionate Candice.
(Let me just quickly note that after re-watching this match, I believe Candice Michelle doesn't get the respect she deserves. She gave us everything she had, from her entrance to her resiliency inside the ring. She was always full of passion and heart.)
After a hard fought match, which saw Beth display her ultimate strength and power throughout, in the end, we all witnessed the Era of The Glamazon begin.
Memorable Moments Of Beth Phoenix
Every single time we saw Beth Phoenix on our television screens, we knew we were about to witness a superstar who personified beauty and strength to the absolute tee. The Glamazon brought us groundbreaking moments that WWE fans will remember for a lifetime.
The very first women's "I Quit" match against the incomparable Melina was one of those groundbreaking moments. At One Night Stand in 2008, the two women climbed into that squared circle and tried to make each other tap out the most painful ways they knew how to. They displayed how much work the Divas at the time had been putting in to make women's wrestling a viable entity in WWE. The grappling and submission specialties that Beth and Melina exhibited during that match were entirely flawless.
Another captivating moment for Beth Phoenix was when she became the 2nd woman to ever enter the men's Royal Rumble match in 2010. Not only did she enter the rumble, she eliminated one of the biggest and strongest men to ever step foot in the WWE, The Great Khali. Who will ever forget when The Glamazon planted a kiss on the Punjabi Playboy and suckered him in to then have him fall over the top rope? It was one of the most iconic Royal Rumble moments in the match's history, as well as a moment in Beth Phoenix' career that fans will never, ever forget.
The Comedic Side Of The Glamazon Was Then Introduced
While we all understand how powerful and talented Beth Phoenix was inside the ring, the WWE Universe was introduced to another side of her that certainly wasn't expected. Who better to get the comedic side out of a superstar than the one and only, Santino Marella? The duo became a must-see commodity each week as fans laughed and enjoyed the antics of Santino, while Beth looked at him with disgust. It was the WWE's version of the Odd Couple as you never understood how they could fit together. However, for some reason, it just seemed to work perfectly.
Whether it was battling inside the ring together or having a conversation in a backstage segment, Glamarella always put a smile on people's faces whenever they were on the screen. That time in Beth's career with Santino added another layer to the amazing superstar that she was and made the WWE Universe appreciate her a million times more.
The Triumphant Return To The Ring
Although the WWE Universe was saddened to hear about the departure of Beth Phoenix, the simple reasoning of starting a family was something totally understandable (How's it going, Rated R Superstar?). She conquered her goals, made her dreams come true, and became not only one of the greatest women superstars in the history of professional wrestling, but she became a bonafide WWE Hall of Famer. She had nothing left to prove in the WWE ring, and everything to gain outside of it. A new family, new aspirations, and a lifetime of happiness.
HOWEVER, during the 1st ever Women's Royal Rumble match, entry #24 gave us all the surprise of a lifetime. While The Irresistible Force, Nia Jax, was waiting inside the ring, a familiar theme hit the ears of the WWE Universe and out came The Glamazon. The face-off between Phoenix and Jax completely sent shock waves around the wrestling world, as fans jumped out of their seats, just waiting to see what would happen. Seeing Beth Phoenix in full gear inside that ring again was such a remarkable sight to behold and it made for a great moment that the members of the WWE Universe will always remember.
Just when you thought it couldn't get any sweeter than her Royal Rumble appearance, an even more special moment of time in the illustrious career of Beth Phoenix occurred. WWE introduced new women's tag titles right before the biggest event of the year, WrestleMania. After a blindsided attack from Tamina and Nia Jax, it was time for the WWE Universe to witness The Glamazon be revived. There wasn't a human being in this world that would be a better fit tag partner for Beth than her former Divas of Doom ally and best friend, Natalya.
Watching these two come together again has been such a privilege to watch, as I know how much Beth and Nattie mean to one another. Last year, they both unfortunately lost their fathers, and knowing that they were able to embark on this WrestleMania journey together was such an incredible thing to witness. Watching them enter on the Mania stage alongside Hall of Famer, Bret "The Hitman" Hart, was something special beyond an explanation of words. You could just see the excitement from Beth and Nattie as they walked down that long ramp, knowing they were about to have a pure WrestleMania moment...together.
They have each other's back, always, and it's their strength as human beings, as well as their unbreakable bond with one another, that TRULY make them The Divas of Doom.
Thank you, Beth Phoenix, for being the backbone of the Divas division and raising women's wrestling to a higher standard. Your hard work and dedication to your craft undeniably helped women become headliners in today's WWE. You are an absolute inspiration to many and will always be known as one of the greatest superstars in professional wrestling history.
Thank you for the memories, thank you for the entertainment, and thank you for the sacrifices you made for the business. Whatever comes next in your life, I'm sure you'll make it nothing short of amazing.
Long live The Glamazon!
