This one for Phil Hughes

Updated on March 29, 2015

The cricket world cup 2015 which was dedicated to Phil Hughes by the Australian cricket team when they lifted the trophy for the fifth time, most by any test playing nation. It was a batting paradise at MCG. It had steep bounce, odd seem and swing which was the only advantage for the poor bowlers. But it was the class and determination of the young Aussie pace battery who bamboozled the Kiwis for a modest total as they earned their fifth world cup trophy.

The front line pacers from Australia rattled the top order as they grabbed the early wickets to give Australia the upper hand. James Faulkner in the middle overs bagged three wickets which proved to be the turning point. NewZeland were done and dusted for 183 in the 45th over.

Aussies were off to a shaky start as Finch fell in the 2nd over. But it was the sheer class of Michael Clarke and the composure of Steve Smith who steered Australia home by 7 wickets under 34 overs. Clarke who was playing his last ODI for Aussies was given a remarkable see off. Whole of the MCG rose to pay tribute to one of the finest gentleman the game has ever seen.

Batsmen dominated throughout the tournament. Kiwis played exceptionally aggressive cricket to make it to their first ever world cup final. However things could not go as they would have wanted in the grand finale. Australian bowled splendid line and length. Match could have been competitive had NewZeland scored around 260 plus. In the end Kiwis grabbed some support because of the way they had played in the tournament.

Team Australia played well as they came up with flying colors. However it was a disappointing final as the crowd expected a neck to neck contest by the two evenly matched sides. But then, that is cricket for you… you can expect anything from any team on a given day. Today it was Australia, the well deserved team won and possibly it was the best send off for Michael Clarke. Well NewZeland better luck next time. Aussies all the way to the podium.!!
