Golf is strange and wonderful.
It is strange in so many ways, that it warranted this top 10 list, as a sport.
You may not know much about it, if you were like me, but I found out there was a lot of cool facts concerning golf. To make it simple, these are some old and new facts for those getting acquainted with the time honored traditions of the world golf tour and tournaments.
Any fan would be smart to know these before watching their next golf tournament on television, or before heading out to play on the open course with friends.
Fact 1 : The Underlying Principle of Golf
There is an underlying principle that is the primary rule, that superceeds all rules in the game of golf.
The rules of golf have been internationally standardized for some time now. This is very important to modern golf. The modern rules and official standards for tournament play are jointly governed by what is called The R&A. This rulebook is considered a spin off formed in 2004 from the original foundation called The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, which goes back to the year 1754, and the United States Golf Association or the USGA.
The underlying principle in the rules of golf is fairness. This is even written on the back cover of the official rule book to this very day. This is the actual quote, " Play the ball as it lies, play the course as you find it, and if you cannot do either, do what is fair. " Simply stated but clearly stated.
Fact 2 : Golf has a Long Historical Tradition
Although most agree that the modern game of golf originated in 15th century Scotland, the the game of golf has ancient are still up for debate. Some would say the history is long but unclear. It seems that the first version of the golf as a sport is tied to the ancient Roman game of paganica. Players of this Roman game are said to have used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball, similar to a hackey sack today, but harder. Paganica probably spread throughout Europe as the Romans went about their conquest of the European continent, during the first century BC. This theory says that is Paganica then eventually evolved into the modern golf game we know.
Fact 3 : The Game of Golf has Holy Ground
Where or when the modern game originated is not important now, for it is in Scotland that it became a tradition. It is in Scotland where the first written record of golf is known to come from. It was in the Scottish historical records that James II did ban the the game of golf in 1457. He considered it to be rebellious, distinctive and stated that it was an unwelcome distraction to learning the sport of archery. Still today, the Old Course at St Andrews, a links course dating to before 1574, is by many golfers and historians considered to be the sacred site of pilgrimage for golf.
Fact 4 : Today Professional Golf is an Global Industry
There are currently over 20 recognized professional golf tours. Each is run by a PGA or an independent Professional Golf Organization. These are in charge of tournaments, events, sponorship, rules and regulations individually. Most pro golf tours require membership, although a few do not. Attaining membership within any elite tour is highly competitive, something few actually achieve, even in a lifetime of play.
Fact 5 : The Game of Golf is a Globally Played Sport
Few games or sports have the global reach and economic prowesss that the game of golf does. The PGA Tour is the largest tour, it attracts the strongest fields, outside the four Majors and the four World Golf Championships events. Today PGA Tour events have a first prize of at least $800,000.00 and counting.
The European Tour only barely ranks second to the PGA Tour in worldwide prestige. Some top professionals consider it an equal. It attracts many players from outside North America. The dream is usually to play enough tournaments to maintain membership status within both the the PGA Tour and European Tour. The Japan Golf Tour, the Asian Tour, the PGA Tour of Australia, and the primarily South African Sunshine Tour are some of the other important tours globally.
Fact 6 : Modern Golf Officially Includes Women as a Sport
Starting many years back in sports history, women have made their stake in the sport of golf. It has now become an important events. There are six principal tours for women, each based in a different country or continent. The most prestigious of these is the United States based LPGA Tour. All of the principal tours offer points in the Women's World Golf Rankings for high finishers in their events.
Fact 7 : The Game of Golf is a Sport for All Ages
Golf is unique in having lucrative competition for older players. It has been a favorite for older retired generations, and places like Sun City, cater to this demographic, by building their golf courses very near to their retirement communities. Today it is almost a standard practice if you live in a state that gets a full summer season of sunshine for golf playing each year.
There also are several senior tours for men aged fifty and over, arguably the best known of which is the U.S. based Champions Tour.

Well I would tell you that I did not share it, it is just shorter, than making memories. Phoenix, Arizona holds a lot of opinions about golf, but for the yes man who has everything, or that a business man who cannot figure out what to do with himself on his business trip off time.

Fact 9 : Golf is About to Become an Olympic Sport
Fans of golf and the Summer Olympics probably are well aware of this fact anyways, so play through and go ahead of us. But it truly is exciting that Golf will officially become part of the Summer Olympic games in the year 2016. Golf was featured in the Summer Olympic Games official programme in 1900 and 1904. At the IOC session in Copenhagen in October 2009, the IOC decided to reinstate this event for the 2016 Summer Olympics. The event will feature professional golfers, many of whom have expressed interest in having golf brought back as an Olympic sport.
