What Golf Equipment Does a Beginner Golfer Need

Updated on July 7, 2012

Golf can be a fun and challenging game that can be enjoyed by both young and old. When you're just starting out, you don't need to buy everything in the pro shop. You need to invest in just a few things to get started playing right away.

Golf Clubs

The most important thing you need to get started playing golf is clubs. A set of golf clubs can range in cost from $100 to over $1000. This can be a large investment when you're first starting. You can often find a used set of clubs on Craigslist or Ebay to save some money until you get a feel for the game and decide if you want to invest more into it.

A set will include 3 woods (driver, 3-wood, 5-wood), a set of irons (3 through 9 iron), a pitching wedge, sand wedge and a putter.

Golf Balls and Tees

You should bring a bag of wooden golf tees and at least a dozen golf balls. Golf balls can be expensive, but many places will sell used balls so you don't pay as much to get started. Be sure to bring a marker to mark your balls so you know which one is yours if you hit them into the woods or another fairway.

A Golf Bag

Once you have a set of golf clubs, golf balls and tees, you will need a bag to put them in. There are different types of bags to choose from. There is a carry bag which is designed to be carried by you and therefore is smaller lighter weight than a cart bag. A cart bag is designed to be used with a golf cart. Cart bags are generally heavier than carry bags.

Go play!

These few pieces of equipment should get you started enjoying the fun game of golf.
