A Long Week-End Lake Retreat Near Home __Nature Inspired R and R with continuing education

Updated on June 3, 2013

A Lake Retreat That Combines Continuing Education With Quality Family Time

When I worked in my first career in the financial service industry, my key community service was a non-profit tech entrepreneurs network for which I served as an unpaid CEO. It was community service activity for many years.

Twice a year, I organized a a "long week-end retreat" to a nearby lake here in Northern Virginia or to another location to combine nature inspired R&R with continuing education and networking. There was a family element to this as my wife and a friend, Krishna helped out with registration, etc as was necessary. We gave Kirshna the title of "Social Secretary".

Here I will briefly describe one such lake retreat to Lake Anna, near historic Fredricksburg, Va, about a 2.5 hour drive from Northern Virginia-DC-MD hub, where our tech biz network group was based. This model can really be adopted to any such non-profit, 501-c-3 group easy enough as may be inspired by the organizers of such an nature inspiring event.

Our group included families, a few single parents, mostly couples and a few singles. There was plenty for each to choose what they wanted to do with their "leisture time" and with whom they wanted to do so, some just as a "family time", others in a small group. We arranged the meals such, that breakfast was on the house, with a brief presentation by an invited expert, typically with a slide presentation, that lasted no more than an hour with Q&A. Lunch, everyone was on their own. Dinner was hosted by one of our key couples and we arranged an expert speaker and Q&A.

An Easy to Do "Self Sustaining" Funding for non-profit 501-c-3 organizations

"Self Sufficiency" , not a business model for "profits'.

As far as funding, we charged a low cost fee that included sharing of cost for the five bedroom, house (each couple assigned one room), and cost of ingredients of the food. Our hosting non-profit had some money also, and chipped in to the community pot.

We have also done a variation of this meeting, with a location at a familiy oriented hotel. Our favorite pick was a Hampton Inn or a Homewood Suite if available.

The attendees, had to be member of our organization to attend this event as we wanted only people who had a commitment to the continous process of our network, not just the one timers. But membership fee was pretty low, just $25 .

But you also had to pass a due diligence to make sure the person had the basic qualifications needed to sustain interest on our format for innovation and tech entrepreneurship support structure. In the cases, where we stayed at such a hotel, members had the responsibility to make their own reservations at the selected hotel. The incentive was of course, they got a nice discount that we arranged for our members with the selected hotel.

This is the basic protocol on a nutshell with two variations for a Long Week-End Lake Retreat Near Home : Nature Inspired R&R with continuing education

Please search Internet on following topic to link Northern Virginia Fredricksburg__Fairfax Community to Community links for virtual teaming Saturday Morning "Eat and Meet" buffet breakfast protocol 9:30 AM_11:30 AM . Previously we did this "eat and meet" event once a month alternating between Fairfax, VA and Bethesda, MD.

It worked well and typically we got 25 to 40 people attending, some entrepreneur types, some university faculty, and some govies or non-profits located in our geography.

Now with the social networks that we are using such as LinkedIn.Com and Pinterest.com and our own Fairfax Community Forum called Fairfax Underground (courtesy Fairfax Chamber of Commerce, the largest Chamber in Virginia) in particular, conversations sharing and virtual teaming pre-event can allow people to network in a more enjoyable and productive way at the "eat and meet" Saturday breakfast event.

Welcome !
