Martial arts is an individual choice based on your goals. Traditional systems like Chinese Kung Fu, Karate, TKD are viable but require much effort with the study of forms/katas and traditional weapons. Modern systems like Krav Maga (Israeli IDF), Systema (Russian Spetsnaz) Haganah, Kapap are all street oriented and not for sport but being combat effective as most originated in paramilitary situations. Everyone should start with a base in western boxing. The conditioning is unmatched. Follow with ground skills, modern weapons training like Escrima or Silat knife styles. The great thing is as a serious martial artist you are free to mix and match and combine styles and systems to your liking and individual needs. Just do not neglect the mental aspects of any training.
