I am not a martial artist, but my understanding is that the answer to your question is: the martial art that is best for you.
What does that mean?
Well, first of all, it means that what works best for me, may not work best for you. You and I, for example, are bound to have different personalities, different characters and different temperaments. If you are choosing a martial art to study, you need to choose the one that fits you best.
What does that mean?
Well, what kind of person are you? How do you interact with the world? If you give yourself time, you will find the right martial art for you.
What are your physical attributes? Are you very strong, particularly for someone of your build? Are you fast? Or is it the case that you have quick reflexes? Do you think you prefer to grapple or strike?
Are you agile? Are you flexible?
Do you prefer complexity or simplicity? Are you a structured person or more of a "free spirit"?
All of those considerations and more can go into choosing a martial art to study.
If I were choose a martial art to study for myself, here is a little how I would evaluate myself:
1. I am not particularly fast; and my reflexes are not that quick.
2. I know that agility is not my strong suit either, on the physical level.
3. I have always been fairly strong (more like what is called "tensile strength), but I am not by any means a powerhouse; I am not weightlifter strong.
4. I like to control the action, in whatever I do --- I know that I am that kind of person, if you can see what I mean; I do not like to react, or "follow" somebody else's lead.
5. I am the kind of person, (who, if ever engaged in the combat arts), would seek to "wear" [my opponent] "down."
6. I know that I do not have so-called "one-punch" knockout power.
Adding all those things up (and a few others), I would probably look for a martial art that offers a mixture of grappling and hitting, like, say, hapkido---but maybe not quite as athletic as, say, "shootfighting," or krav maga.
I would be looking for something that did not require such athleticism on my part. I would really like efficient energy usage. Perhaps I would choose wing chun kung fu, so-called "sticky hands."
And so on and so forth. I hope that helps.
