Steroids certainly has given baseball a black-eye but it hasn't destroyed the game forever. In fact, individual player records and Hall Of Fame selections have, and will continue to suffer considerably more that the game of baseball - from both a team and league perspective.
The best thing the MLB can do to revive it's integrity regarding steroids is to have the league front office and MLB Players Association agree to more stringent and random Steroid, Drug and Human Growth Hormone (HGH) testing (when a reliable HGH test available). With this transparency, fans will give back the respect to the individual statistics, and once again make baseball players true role models for our children.
FYI, many baseball fans don't realize that before steroids, amphetamine use in MLB was widespread. But in those days, there was less reporting and more cover-up by the league.
