I would think a lot of this depends on your personality. The late, great Bruce Lee said in an interview, that his goal in teaching someone martial arts was to teach her how to express herself through movement.
Its about choosing the martial art that right for you based on your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, and even character and personality.
Are you a fast-paced sort of person, very adaptable, inclined to "take things as they come," then I should think you might like to choose martial arts that emphasize striking techniques, punching, kicking, chopping, etc.
Suppose you are more of a slow-paced, methodical type, who does not like to "take things as they come," but you prefer to live life in a more structured way. This is probably you if I said to you, "You want to go to this party with us?" and your first response is to ask, "Whose going to be there?" You are one, as I am frankly, who likes to always know what he's getting into, then you might go to another direction.
In this case you might choose something like judo or jiu jitsu, or some other martial arts that utilize plenty of throwing, flipping, locking, and grappling techniques -- one is seemingly more in control of things.... you are not "taking things as they come," yo see?
There are other factors too and its impossible to give a complete answer here; but I do believe one can match up a martial art with his/her mental strong points, personality and character tendencies, body type, physical strength, etc.
