Barnett Commando Crossbow

Updated on April 5, 2016

Barnett Commando Crossbow

The Barnett Commando Crossbow has stood the test of time.

Although no longer in production, this crossbow is still highly sought after by collectors and hunters.

You can find this in two styles, the Commando I and the updated Commando II.

Still widely used for both target practice and hunting.

Barnett Commando Crossbow Reviews

Barnett makes some of the best crossbows available. So much so in fact, avid bow hunters literally go on quests to locate and purchase vintage Barnetts. The Barnett Commando Crossbow is no exception. One lucky collector was able to track down an early edition of the Commando Crossbow, manufactured in the late seventies or early eighties, and was tickled with his purchase. One of the most favorite parts of the early Barnetts, he says, is the construction utilizing mag-alloy.

Birds of a feather... Hunt together

That collector is not alone in his love for early Barnetts and despite the fact that the early models were problematic, most avid bow hunters find them alluring in their value and reliability. One collector points out the differences of the very early models, some of those being; leather protectors on the prod tips, the buttstock section of the bow had a pistol grip hinge with two flanges as opposed to newer models having the flanges actually molded into the pistol grip's finger groove. Whilst the later models had dome shaped heads on the cocking arm pivot bolts, the older models had hex shaped heads.

It's what's inside that counts

Another collector further describes how the Commando Crossbows differed. According to him, the latest Commando 1 Crossbows were built to lessen string wear thanks to the molded plastic covers on the cocking hooks. They spread the load. The limb improved due to its 175-pound prod, which was plastic coated and entitled "velocity speed". The older limbs were apparently not as stable. This collector says that when it comes to the newer plastic coated model he has yet to see one that was cracked. Additionally, a latch cover located at the point where the string runs below it flared out along the bottom edge. Finally, protruding from the latch cover casting was a safety catch button whose head was dome shaped. Our detail minded collector claims that the Barnett Supreme is the Holy Grail of extraordinary crossbows. He also has an early model mint condition Trident and Imp pistol and is currently looking for a Panzer 1. Sounds serious.

My very first bow

Our last avid bow hunter says that the Barnett Commando was his very first crossbow. It was the one with prod ends that were made with molded plastic ends, hooks with latex tubing on them and round head screws. He believes that the model was a 1982, which was purchased in the summer of 1983. His stock, rather than being made of magnesium, was constructed of aluminum. Alas, he is distressed over the fact that he did eventually part with it. He sold it and now wishes he had it back. It was in perfect condition. Kind of makes you wanna cry doesn't it?

Clearly, the Barnett Commando Crossbow is not only on the list of much wanted hunting gear, even the old originals are still desired and utilized. After reading so many reviews on Barnett products, I must say; hunters believe in the name Barnett. They trust it for quality and value as well as accuracy.
