What to Look for in Track Spikes

If like me you are a keen sprinter, you will already know minimizing the time you spend on your feet and forward propulsion is key! The drive phase is paramount when looking for that ultimate win, sprint spikes are designed to ensure maximum speed right from the starting blocks to the finishing tape. Short distance spikes will have a full length plate which will span from the forefoot right to the heel. This will suit you best if you are racing or running with no turns as they are specifically designed to blast down straights.

To make sure and stop any recoil most spikes will have a stiffer plate under the forefoot, This will mean that you have a very responsive shoe which will in turn give you a springing BOOST with each stride meaning a faster time. The top part of track spikes are designed with you in mind with the top pins being more narrow than what an athlete is used to. The spikes will grip your foot firmly and hold it in place to try help with running economy. Other models might have a strap above the tongue or maybe even a zip.

Normally short distance running shoes will have around 7 to 10 spikes on each shoe to ensure better traction on the track. Though athletes will only have 6 to 8. Make sure and tighten each one securely so they do not fall out during your race. Try not to tighten them too tight as you could strip/Ring the spike wrench.
