Camping Fun for Kids - Printable Scavenger Hunt and Kid Fun Packing List
Plan ahead for a fun time and a great scavenger hunt when camping with kids!
Having a great vacation doesn't just happen on its own. Plan ahead for a fun time camping. My family went camping at camp grounds when I was a kid, and I camp now with my children. Here are some tips for packing what you need for a great time, and a printable scavenger hunt for an afternoon of fun.
Kids need to be entertained - even when on a restful vacation, but it does not take much. A lot of the time, you can tote along some common things you already have, even things you have had forever, and the kids will find new life in them. You will see that when in a different context (such as a campground) those simple things come to life.

Easy Video on how to make a campfire
This video gives you all the info you need to look smart at the campground, and start a good campfire for your family. Your friends, kids and family will be very impressed with how well you put it together and keep it going !
Things You May Already Have and Should Pack
When going to a campground, you really do not need to buy much - the things you already have can keep them busy - especially those things that they don't use everyday. Leave the electronics home, and bring out the active and social toys!
- Jump Rope
- Balls (all and any kind )
- Deck of Cards
- UNO Cards
- Board Game
- Printed Scavenger List
- Bike and Helmet
- Bucket (for caught nature - i.e. salamanders)
- Coloring Books or Activity Books and Markers (or Crayons)
- Fishing Pole
- Remote Control Car or Boat (or helicopter/plane if you have them)
- Bathing Suits/Towels/Floatables
- Books (of interest and readable for the kids)
- Magnifying Glass
- 2 way phones AKA 2 way radios (or walkie talkies) - they are fun, and also provide communication when the kids are away from campsite.
- Glow Sticks - for fun, but also for safety. With glow sticks on, you can spot your kid in the dark!
- Sidewalk Chalk (can usually get a pack at the dollar store if you don't have it)
- Bubbles ! (they never use them at home- but will love them there!)
- Tonka Trucks
Simple, Classic, Active Toys
You didn't bring them camping just so they could sit in the woods while they play their Nintendo DS, right? The whole point is they they get active in the great outdoors. Simple active toys, often overlooked at home, can be big hits when camping.
Rory's Story Cubes
At the picnic table, on the beach, or by the campfire, just toss Rory's Story Cubes and use your imagination to create a story.
These cubes are so simple and fun. The whole family can play along (even the little ones who can't read). Your sure to have some great family times with these cubes and a few chuckles too.
You can get a ton of stuff at Walmart ...
Walmart.com is way easy, they don't cost any more, and they ship directly to your local store or house.
Why wait to buy it in the store, and risk forgetting, or not being able to find it. Click on this logo to get it ordered at Walmart.com and you can have it shipped directly to your house pretty cheaply, or ship to store for free. Whatever it is your needing for the camping trip (swim suit, propane tank, tent, Smore's supplies) you know Walmart has it. And if they don't, Walmart.com does, and they will ship it to them with YOUR name on it !
Click on this box to take you to Walmart.com (and I get credit for the click too :O) So I will love you for it :O) - THANKS ! )
Hunt and Find !
If you want to get real creative, you can get a special box to be a treasure chest - and you can have your little "pirates" hunt for the list of needed treasures. This might be a way to get the kids interested if they need more than just nature - add your imagination !

Good fun at the picnic table
You'll surely see some interesting critters. Have one of these to keep an eye on them.
Spin it, throw it. It's just fun.
Take The Kids On A Nature Hunt
Search for things in nature - and LEARN !
You can take this list along with you and have them hunt for all these items that you can find in nature (or campground) - It is great to introduce the kids to nature that is all around them :O) It is something that a lot of kids that live in more urban areas NEVER see.
3D Woodcraft Projects
Having some things your little ones can do indoors is a good idea in the case of rain. Woodcraft kits like this one are very reasonably priced and require no tools for assembly. They come in flat sheets so they are small to pack, but very impressive once finished. These are good for kids 10 and up, or a little younger if they do a lot of kits with instructions. My boy loves putting together lego sets, so naturally he also loves doing kits like this, and he was able to put together one of the large ship ones almost completely by himself at 8.
Will your ride be long? - you might want a scavanger list for in the car !!!
